MS NOW<\/a> host Joe Scarborough<\/a> on Tuesday said he personally warned President Donald Trump<\/a> not to launch major U.S. combat operations in Iran<\/a>, adding with frustration on \u201cMorning Joe\u201d that he wasn\u2019t the only one to do so, as \u201cexperts told everybody\u201d the same.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told him on the phone, \u2018Iran is not Venezuela!\u2019\u201d Scarborough recalled Tuesday<\/a>. \u201c\u2018Don\u2019t listen to Lindsey Graham! Don\u2019t do it! Iran is not Venezuela!\u2019 But he thought it was. Experts told him it wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cIf he had talked to anybody on the Iran desk in the CIA, they would\u2019ve said, \u2018No, this is a nightmare, you will get entangled in a quagmire there, don\u2019t go.\u2019 And so yeah, you know, experts, sometimes actually you need to pick up the phone and call one or two of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scarborough argued such experts might have stopped the president from getting involved in what Robert Kagan, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution think tank, has warned could lead to one of the most consequential U.S. military defeats<\/a> in modern history.<\/p>\n

Kagan suggested as much in a recent op-ed for The Atlantic<\/a> titled, \u201cCheckmate in Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump has since spent much of his focus<\/a> on his exorbitant White House ballroom project, which many voters firmly oppose<\/a>. The Iran war is similarly unpopular<\/a> among the American people, while Graham has called its staggering taxpayer burden the \u201cbest money ever spent.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

U.S.-Israeli airstrikes in February<\/a> led Iran to close the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world\u2019s oil passes, resulting in high gas prices<\/a> and fears of a global energy crisis<\/a>. Trump claimed last month<\/a> that a \u201cwhole civilization will die\u201d if the strait isn\u2019t reopened.<\/p>\n

The war has already cost at least 13 U.S. military service members<\/a> and more than 3,000 Iranians their lives, including dozens of children at an Iranian school<\/a>. The U.S. is blockading local ports<\/a> to pressure Iran amid ongoing negotiations<\/a> to accept a deal to end the war.<\/p>\n

Scarborough explained the rather basic reason for not waging war against Iran.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me tell you what experts told everybody about Iran: \u2018Don\u2019t go! Don\u2019t go into Iran,\u2019\u201d he noted. \u201cBecause if you go into Iran, they\u2019ll cut off the strait immediately … People have been saying it since the early 1980s, \u2018You can\u2019t do it because they\u2019ll cut off the strait.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Scarborough added, \u201cAnd yet they did it anyway.
