{"id":133561,"date":"2026-05-27T17:40:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T17:40:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/133561\/"},"modified":"2026-05-27T17:40:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T17:40:08","slug":"flood-alerts-in-syria-and-iraq-after-heavy-rainfall-and-water-releases-by-turkey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/133561\/","title":{"rendered":"Flood alerts in Syria and Iraq after heavy rainfall and water releases by Turkey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-0-BMTUPHZAP5HAXEFCTDS67BIPFE\">Authorities in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/syria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/syria\">Syria<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/iraq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/iraq\">Iraq<\/a> have issued evacuation orders for areas along the Euphrates after heavy rain and upstream water releases in Turkey raised fears of flooding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-1-WTJPVXX6OVCCHBX6ZY6SX6I4LY\">An alert issued by Syria\u2019s Ministry of Relief and Crisis Management on Tuesday urged people to stay away from the banks of the river, and warned that rising water levels posed a threat to homes and farmland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-4-FDZW22AMWZDUZJ7ITQ2DQKMZYE\">People living next to the Euphrates, particularly in low-lying areas, were urged to leave their homes and take \u201cmaximum precautions to ensure safety,\u201d Syrian Civil Defence was quoted as saying by state news agency Sana.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-5-ZMPBXUBOWRHEXB74IPQJK27CAQ\">Syria&#8217;s Energy Ministry said authorities at the Tabqa Dam, 40km upstream from the city of Raqqa, had opened its spillway gates to relieve a build-up of pressure that threatened the structure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-6-FJUVXSJRZZBWZHGLNMDCPMLYU4\">The dam\u2019s management attributed the increase in pressure to heavy seasonal rainfall this year and to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/turkey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/turkey\">Turkey<\/a> releasing a massive volume of water from upstream reservoirs in recent days, significantly increasing the river&#8217;s flow into northern and eastern Syria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-QOZIT57XPBB4ZEFLNWI5ZX2EQE\">The city council in Maadan, in Raqqa province, closed a bridge across the river as a precautionary measure after the appearance of holes and cracks \u201cas a result of the rising water levels and their impact on the bridge\u2019s structure and the road leading to it\u201d, Sana reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-10-XCGBKSDPJJG3TM5W4FKO4WITNU\">In Deir Ezzor, rising water swept away parts of an earthen bridge across the Euphrates, forcing residents to rely on small boats to move around the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-11-PFM5DHB6QNEE5EXQ4XF2QUAEQQ\">The river flows east through Raqqa and Deir Ezzor provinces before entering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/raq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/raq\">Iraq<\/a>&#8216;s Anbar province, where local officials have also raised the alarm over potential flooding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-12-QT6S5SXHHBABRFLYOPDPCAV6HQ\">\u201cAnbar Governor Omar Mishan Dabbous has declared a state of full alert for 72 hours, warning of an upcoming wave of torrents and devastating floods coming from the Syrian border through the town of Al Qaim,\u201d the provincial council said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-N5FZAM5Y55H4JLPEGTLPJOQHSM\">\u201cThe Governor has instructed operational commands and public service departments to immediately deploy to low-lying areas and evacuate residents at risk to safeguard lives, while redirecting water towards the Al Warrar canal system to absorb the surge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-14-XLPXOGQZHNH37AUDM4QNCYJTGU\">Iraq has also experienced heavy rain this year after years of drought.
