{"id":133565,"date":"2026-05-27T17:42:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T17:42:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/133565\/"},"modified":"2026-05-27T17:42:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T17:42:08","slug":"nyc-mayor-zohran-mamdani-to-skip-israel-parade-first-absence-in-six-decades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/133565\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani to skip Israel Parade, first absence in six decades"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Mayor Zohran Mamdani has confirmed he will not be attending the upcoming annual Israel Parade on Sunday, making him the first NYC mayor not to participate since 1964.<\/p>\n<p>For the last 61 years, every single sitting Mayor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/diaspora\/antisemitism\/article-897546\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York City<\/a> has joined in the parade, which is the biggest such celebration outside the Jewish state itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The theme of the 2026 Israel Day on Fifth is &#8220;Proud Americans, Proud Zionists.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">In a statement to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA), Mamdani said, \u201cI look forward to joining and hosting many community events celebrating Jewish life in New York and the rich Jewish history and culture of our city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While I will not be attending the Israel Day Parade, my lack of attendance should not be mistaken for a refusal to provide security or the necessary permits for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/diaspora\/antisemitism\/article-895231\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">safety.<\/a> I\u2019ve been very clear: I believe in equal rights for all people everywhere. That principle guides me consistently,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>NY leaders and Jewish officials condemn Mamdani\u2019s absence from Israel Parade<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">This is a dramatic break from last year\u2019s parade, which saw then-Mayor Eric Adams join 40,000 people marching in support of Israel and the Jewish people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">&#8220;New York has historically been proud of its deep relationship with Israel. Not joining the parade is an affront to the history of New York City,&#8221; Moshe Davis, former executive director of the Mayor\u2019s Office to Combat Antisemitism under Mayor Eric Adams, said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/article-897403\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israel&#8217;s Consul General<\/a> in NY, Ofir Akunis, called on all Jewish communities and Israelis in New York to come to the Israel Parade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">&#8220;This year, when antisemitism and hatred of Israel is at an all-time high \u2014 fueled by leaders in NYC and worldwide \u2014 we must show them that the blue and white flag will never be taken down!&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Rabbi Marc Schneier of the Orthodox Hampton Synagogue addressed Mamdani directly, saying, &#8220;No one wants you at the Celebrate Israel Parade anyway. We don\u2019t want you, your rhetoric, and your diatribe to ruin our proud day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Protest against Mamdani&#8217;s policies<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The group End Jew Hatred held a large protest outside Mamdani&#8217;s residence &#8211; Gracie Mansion &#8211; on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">End Jew Hatred organized the rally to protest Mamdani&#8217;s refusal to stop religious freedom violations against the Jewish people. This included his veto in April of a bill that would have protected educational facilities from protests in a legislative attempt to combat antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">&#8220;Islamists and radical mobs have flooded our streets and attacked houses of worship. We will not be intimidated.
