President Donald Trump on Monday said leaders of both Israel and the Lebanon-based terror group Hezbollah had agreed to dial back their ongoing conflict. In a post on Truth Social<\/a>, the president said he’d spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who agreed to cancel a major raid of Beirut. Additionally Trump said Hezbollah leaders agreed, through intermediaries, to stop firing on Israeli troops.\u00a0 The U.S.\u00a0president\u00a0said he hoped the agreement would last for eternity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n What led up to that announcement?\u00a0Israeli leaders ordered attacks on the southern suburbs of Beirut earlier in the day\u00a0on Monday, targeting\u00a0 Hezbollah. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz accused<\/a> the group of repeatedly violating the ongoing ceasefire<\/a> agreement in the Israel-Hezbollah conflict<\/a>. While Trump helped broker the ceasefire<\/a>, resolving this conflict has complicated the diplomatic end to the U.S.-Iran war. Any ceasefire between the United States and Iran should also include a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran\u2019s minister of foreign affairs, said<\/a> in a post Monday.<\/p>\n What other recent attacks has Israel conducted? The order came after Israeli troops captured<\/a> the 900-year-old Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon over the weekend. Israel\u2019s military said<\/a> it took the castle, which Crusaders built during the Medieval era, because of Hezbollah\u2019s presence in the nearby area. Israel previously captured the structure in 1982<\/a> and held it until withdrawing from Lebanon in 2000. The castle holds a strategic<\/a> mountaintop position overlooking the Litani River. Katz said<\/a> Israel has once again raised its flag over this structure. The Israel Defense Forces posted images<\/a> of Hezbollah weapons caches that it said were uncovered\u00a0in the Beaufort Ridge and Wadi Saluki area in southern Lebanon. The IDF said the images were proof that Hezbollah was operating in civilian areas.<\/p>\n How have world leaders responded to Israel\u2019s actions? French Foreign Minister Jean-No\u00ebl Barrot said<\/a> the United Nations Security Council should have an emergency meeting to discuss Israeli military operations in Lebanon. He called Israel\u2019s actions and occupation of Lebanese territory unacceptable. <\/p>\n Secretary of State Marco Rubio had proposed fresh negotiations between Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to de-escalate the conflict, a U.S. official told media<\/a> outlets<\/a>.
