This poses a direct challenge to the U.S. Department of War\u2019s core focus on \u201cmaximum lethality,\u201d as outlined in the\u00a02026 National Defense Strategy<\/a>. That goal, however, is unachievable if the\u00a0information\u00a0battlespace is lost.\u00a0Cognitive dominance\u00a0in the\u00a0operational\u00a0information\u00a0environment\u00a0is not a distraction from lethality; it is the fundamental prerequisite for it.\u00a0To win, the\u00a0joint\u00a0forces\u00a0must complement\u00a0their\u00a0pursuit of kinetic overmatch with a mastery of the cognitive domain.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s gray zone strategy<\/a>, a mix of proxy warfare and calibrated escalation detailed in analyses by\u00a0CSIS\u00a0and\u00a0Michael Eisenstadt, is designed to create dilemmas and exploit the seams in Western military thought. Yet,\u00a0how do you build this mindset\u00a0at\u00a0scale? The answer lies in a structured, teachable framework. The\u00a0Olympus Mons Problem-Solving Model,<\/a>\u00a0a methodology developed\u00a0at The Air University and\u00a0Defense Information School. It\u00a0was designed specifically to make the abstract actionable. It provides a repeatable process for planners to solve \u201cwicked problems\u201d in the information domain. Its five core elements are:\u00a0<\/p>\n

(1)\u00a0Complex Adaptive Systems Thinking:\u00a0This foundational mindset shifts planners from linear predictable models to seeing the information environment as a dynamic ecosystem. It\u00a0allows\u00a0them to\u00a0anticipate\u00a0ripple effects and\u00a0identify\u00a0high-leverage nodes in an\u00a0adversary\u2019s\u00a0network.\u00a0<\/p>\n

(2)\u00a0PESTLE and Ecosystem Analysis:\u00a0Using a structured analysis of the\u00a0Political,\u00a0Economic,\u00a0Social,\u00a0Technological,\u00a0Legal, and\u00a0Environmental domains, this step builds the deep situational awareness\u00a0required\u00a0to uncover the root grievances an adversary like Iran exploits.\u00a0<\/p>\n

We must integrate cognitive frameworks like the Olympus Mons model into professional military education and operational planning. This is not just about improving human decision-making today; it is about future-proofing our force. The structured, logic-based nature of this model is the most compatible framework for integration with the Information Advantage\u00a0large language models that will define the next generation of warfare, allowing our warfighters to serve as the critical \u2018human-in-the-loop\u2019 for AI-enabled operations\u00a0in the information environment.\u00a0<\/p>\n
