Around 35,000 members of Iraqi armed factions will be absorbed into
\nstate security and military institutions in exchange for surrendering their
\nweapons, a political source told Shafaq News Agency on Wednesday, describing
\nthe plan as a major step that could reshape the country\u2019s armed landscape.<\/p>\n
The proposal, discussed during the most recent Shiite Coordination
\nFramework meeting, was put forward by Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief Ali
\nal-Zaidi. It lays out the distribution of positions across the army, police,
\nand the Counter Terrorism Service, while setting a three-month deadline for
\nother armed groups to decide whether to join the process.<\/p>\n
\u201cAuthorities are preparing enforcement measures for factions that fail
\nto comply within the deadline, including possible legal and security
\nconsequences,\u201d the source added, noting that financing for the large-scale
\nabsorption remains under review, with internal borrowing among the options
\nbeing considered.<\/p>\n
The initiative builds on earlier integration steps, including the Similarly, Asaib Ahl al-Haq (AAH<\/a>) and Kataib Imam Ali, two of Iraq\u2019s Meanwhile, Ashab al-Kahf, one of Iraq\u2019s prominent clandestine armed
\nabsorption of roughly 15,000 Saraya al-Salam members, the armed wing of Iraq\u2019s
\nPatriotic Shiite Movement (PSM-Sadrist), led by Muqtada al-Sadr, who previously
\nordered<\/a> the dissolution of the forces, leaving around 20,000 positions
\navailable under the current framework.<\/p>\n
