PHOENIX (AZFamily) – Four House Republicans joined Democrats to limit President Trump\u2019s war powers in Iran, but Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs was not among them.<\/p>\n
The five-term congressman, who is also running for Arizona governor, voted against the resolution.<\/p>\n
Following the vote, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson warned it will weaken the administration.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it is a very dangerous prospect to take away from the administration and the commander in chief right now the ability to negotiate. That\u2019s what this does. It weakens us, our position and our leverage in negotiation,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n
Biggs calls vote a \u2018political trap\u2019<\/p>\n
Biggs said he thought it was a political trap.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think that was a Democrat gotcha vote where they wanted to embarrass the president. I\u2019m not into embarrassing the president,\u201d Biggs said.<\/p>\n
All six Republicans in the Arizona congressional delegation voted against the resolution. That includes Rep. David Schweikert, who is also running for governor.<\/p>\n
The measure still needs to pass the Senate. If approved, it would force Trump to withdraw military forces from the ongoing war or seek congressional approval.<\/p>\n
Biggs said he doesn\u2019t think it will come to that.<\/p>\n
\u201cI believe that there\u2019s an incredibly high likelihood that this thing get resolved in the next few weeks,\u201d Biggs said.<\/p>\n
If the Senate passes an identical version it would not need the president\u2019s signature. If changes are made, then it would need the president\u2019s signature to take effect.<\/p>\n
