{"id":147340,"date":"2026-06-05T23:43:20","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T23:43:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/147340\/"},"modified":"2026-06-05T23:43:20","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T23:43:20","slug":"cpj-israels-mistake-claim-fails-to-justify-deadly-october-2023-attack-on-lebanon-journalists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/147340\/","title":{"rendered":"CPJ: Israel\u2019s \u2018mistake\u2019 claim fails to justify deadly October 2023 attack on Lebanon journalists\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New York, June 5, 2026 \u2014 The Committee to Protect Journalists rejects comments by Israel\u2019s ambassador to France, Joshua Laurent Zarka, characterizing the October 13, 2023 Israeli strikes that killed Reuters video journalist Issam Abdallah and injured six other journalists a \u201cmistake.\u201d His remarks fail to justify why Israeli forces attacked a clearly identifiable group of journalists in southern Lebanon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kR745WpjMR8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interview<\/a> with France 2, Ambassador Zarka claimed that the Israeli military believed the journalists were \u201cterrorists,\u201d despite extensive documentation that they were visibly marked as press, operating openly on a hill, and had been stationary at their location for an extended period while carrying out their reporting. The attack, which involved two strikes hitting the same location, killed Abdallah and wounded journalists from multiple international outlets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Israeli ambassador\u2019s explanation fails to answer the central question in this apparent war crime: why did Israeli forces repeatedly strike a group of journalists who were plainly identifiable as members of the press,\u201d said CPJ Regional Director Sara Qudah. \u201cThe journalists wore PRESS markings, remained in the same location for an extended period, and carried out their work in plain sight. Israeli authorities must release all evidence supporting their claim that Israeli soldiers misidentified the journalists and make public the full findings of their purported investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/special-reports\/no-justice-for-journalists-targeted-by-israel-despite-strong-evidence-of-war-crime\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">double-tap Israeli attack<\/a> in southern Lebanon on the group of seven journalists was the first instance CPJ documented of Israeli forces deliberately targeting journalists following the outbreak of war on October 7, 2023. <a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/data\/people\/issam-abdallah\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Abdallah<\/a> was killed in the attack and Agence France-Presse photojournalist Christina Assi was gravely wounded, resulting in the amputation of her right leg. Five other journalists were also <a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/2023\/10\/journalist-killed-others-injured-in-southern-lebanon-strike\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wounded<\/a>: Thaer Al-Sudani, Elie Brakhya, Dylan Collins, Carmen Joukhadar, and Maher Nazeh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In March 2024, an investigation by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon concluded that an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/israeli-tank-strike-killed-clearly-identifiable-reuters-reporter-un-report-2024-03-13\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israeli tank targeted<\/a> \u201cclearly identifiable\u201d journalists in violation of international law, according to Reuters\u2019 review of the investigation, which has not been made public. Four additional <a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/2023\/12\/cpj-calls-for-accountability-after-reports-find-israel-likely-targeted-journalists-in-lebanon\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">investigations<\/a> \u2014 by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afp.com\/en\/agency\/inside-afp\/inside-afp\/journalists-killed-and-injured-lebanon-afps-investigation-points\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AFP<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2023\/12\/lebanon-deadly-israeli-attack-on-journalists-must-be-investigated-as-a-war-crime\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amnesty International<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/video-photos\/video\/2023\/12\/07\/israel-strikes-journalists-lebanon-apparently-deliberate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Human Rights Watch<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/graphics\/ISRAEL-LEBANON\/JOURNALIST\/akveabxrzvr\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters<\/a> \u2014 all independently arrived at the same conclusion: that Israel conducted an apparently deliberate attack on the journalists.
