Iran launched multiple drones towards the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, prompting a swift military response from the United States, which shot down at least four of the aircraft, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM).<\/p>\n
American officials said the one-way attack drones appeared to be targeting either commercial vessels passing through the strategic waterway or US military assets operating in the region.<\/p>\n
Following the interceptions, US forces carried out retaliatory strikes on Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites at Goruk and on Qeshm Island, saying the action was necessary to prevent further attacks and protect maritime traffic.<\/p>\n
\u201cMoments ago, CENTCOM forces shot down four Iranian one-way attack drones that were launched toward the Strait of Hormuz. The attack drones posed an immediate threat to regional maritime traffic,” CENTCOM said in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cUS forces subsequently struck Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites in Goruk and on Qeshm Island to defend against further attacks. American forces remain vigilant and postured to respond to unjustified Iranian aggression in self-defence,” it added.<\/p>\n
The incident marks the latest escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran despite an ongoing ceasefire and parallel diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict.<\/p>\n
The United States and Iran have continued to accuse each other of violating the ceasefire that was intended to halt weeks of hostilities across the Middle East.<\/p>\n
The conflict intensified earlier this week after Iran launched missiles and drones at US military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait. The US military said the incoming projectiles were intercepted and caused no significant damage. An Indian national was killed in a strike at Kuwait airport.<\/p>\n
Saturday\u2019s drone launch near the Strait of Hormuz \u2014 a critical chokepoint through which a large portion of the world\u2019s oil supplies pass \u2014 is likely to raise fresh concerns about regional stability and maritime security.<\/p>\n
Trump Says Iran\u2019s Military Has Been \u2018Totally Destroyed\u2019<\/p>\n
Amid the latest developments, US President Donald Trump claimed that American strikes had severely degraded Iran\u2019s military capabilities, though he acknowledged that Tehran still retains some offensive capacity.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve totally destroyed their military,” Trump said in an interview with NBC News.<\/p>\n
\u201cMost of the drone factories have been knocked out, most of the launching pads have been knocked out, and most of the missile manufacturing areas have been knocked out. But they still have capacity. They have some missiles, they have some drones,” he said.<\/p>\n
Trump estimated that Iran retains roughly \u201c21% to 22%” of its missile arsenal.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a lot of missiles, but it\u2019s not what it was when we first attacked,” he added.<\/p>\n
The latest confrontation comes as negotiators from both countries continue efforts to reach a broader agreement aimed at ending hostilities and reducing tensions across the region.<\/p>\n
While President Trump has recently expressed optimism that talks are progressing, Iranian officials have maintained that negotiations remain at a \u201cdeadlock” and have accused Washington of failing to meet key demands, including the release of frozen Iranian assets.<\/p>\n
