Iran declared the Strait of Hormuz closed to all vessels after renewed US strikes and warned that ships attempting to cross it would be attacked.<\/p>\n
Tehran imposed a\u00a0ban on\u00a0ships passing through the Strait of\u00a0Hormuz after the United States resumed strikes on\u00a0Iran. According to\u00a0a\u00a0statement by\u00a0the central military command headquarters of\u00a0the Iranian Armed Forces, Khatam al-Anbiya, the restriction applies to\u00a0all types of\u00a0vessels\u00a0\u2014 from oil tankers to\u00a0merchant ships.<\/p>\n
Iranian state television reports that Tehran linked the closure of\u00a0the strait to\u00a0the continuing actions of\u00a0the United States and attacks by\u00a0American forces on\u00a0southern areas of\u00a0Hormozgan province. The Iranian command said the situation in\u00a0the Hormuz area had become unstable, and therefore traffic through the strait had been halted.<\/p>\n
Iran warned that any vessel that attempts to\u00a0pass through the closed strait will become a\u00a0target for attack. Against this background, the IRGC reported striking two vessels which, according to\u00a0its version, had tried to\u00a0cross Hormuz. It\u00a0also stated that any approach to\u00a0the strait would be\u00a0regarded as\u00a0cooperation with the enemy.<\/p>\n
Washington presents the opposite picture of\u00a0events. US\u00a0Central Command claims that shipping through the Strait of\u00a0Hormuz continues without obstruction, with vessels moving in\u00a0both directions.<\/p>\n
Amid the strikes, US\u00a0President Donald Trump issued a\u00a0harsh ultimatum to\u00a0Tehran on\u00a0Fox News. He\u00a0said the United States would bomb Iran \u00abto\u00a0hell\u00bb on\u00a0Friday night if\u00a0the Iranian side did not agree to\u00a0a\u00a0deal with Washington. Later, according to\u00a0the channel, Trump promised to\u00a0stop the bombing, allegedly after an\u00a0appeal from Iran.<\/p>\n
On\u00a0Thursday night, the Iranian agency Mehr reported fighting between the armed forces of\u00a0Iran and the United States in\u00a0the Persian Gulf area. According to\u00a0its data, explosions occurred on\u00a0Hengam and Qeshm islands.<\/p>\n
Before that, CENTCOM announced the start of\u00a0strikes on\u00a0Iran on\u00a0Trump\u2019s orders. Axios journalist Barak Ravid reported that the US\u00a0military had attacked military facilities in\u00a0the south of\u00a0the Islamic republic. Iranian media wrote about air defense activity in\u00a0western Tehran, as\u00a0well as\u00a0in\u00a0the areas of\u00a0Bandar Abbas, Minab, Mohr and Sirik.<\/p>\n
Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth had warned the previous evening that the United States would intensify attacks on\u00a0Iran overnight. Trump himself had earlier accused Tehran of\u00a0dragging out negotiations and promised large-scale strikes on\u00a0key infrastructure of\u00a0the Islamic republic.<\/p>\n
The United States explains its actions by\u00a0the tasks of\u00a0maritime blockade and self-defense. Iran, in\u00a0turn, says it\u00a0is\u00a0taking retaliatory measures.
