We strongly condemn the renewed missile fire from Iran, Lebanon and Yemen as well as the recent terrorist attack in Central Israel. Hungary stands by Israel’s right to defend its citizens and urges a return to negotiations in order to reduce tensions as soon as possible,’ she wrote on X.

The statement was promptly acknowledged by both the Israeli Foreign Minister and Israel’s ambassador to Budapest. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar thanked Orbán with the words ‘Thank you, dear friend,’ while Israeli Ambassador to Hungary Maya Kadosh expressed appreciation for Hungary’s solidarity, saying the support during these challenging times was greatly valued.

Iran Resumes Direct Strikes on Israel

After a pause of several months, Iran once again directly attacked Israel on Sunday evening. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), all of the launched missiles were successfully intercepted, and no casualties or damage were reported.

The attack came just days after Israel conducted airstrikes in Beirut against Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group. The Israeli leadership argued these were necessary because Hezbollah had violated the ceasefire that had come into effect the previous month, brokered with American mediation.

Iran had warned earlier that it was considering retaliatory steps following the Israeli actions. Analysts widely interpreted the Iranian missile attack as primarily a political signal—a demonstration that the regime remains willing and able to act directly against Israel. The scale of the attack, however, appeared to be deliberately limited. These are expected to influence the scope and timing of any Israeli response.

New Government, New Doctrine?

Within the space of a few weeks, Hungary’s new government under Prime Minister Péter Magyar has sent two distinct signals regarding Israel that together paint a more complex picture of Budapest’s approach to the Middle East than its predecessor’s unconditional backing.

For years, Viktor Orbán’s government acted as Israel’s most reliable shield within the European Union, routinely blocking or diluting EU resolutions and sanctions packages that Jerusalem considered hostile. That era appears to be over. When EU foreign ministers gathered in Brussels in May, they agreed on new sanctions targeting Israeli settlers deemed to have used violence against Palestinians—a package approved with the new Hungarian government’s consent.

‘The message was unmistakable; Budapest would no longer function as an automatic brake on EU measures critical of Israel’

Earlier, Hungarian FM Anita Orbán, appearing before Hungary’s parliamentary foreign affairs committee ahead of her confirmation as Foreign Minister, stated that Hungary would use its veto only when ‘a genuine Hungarian interest is at stake,’ and made clear the country would never act in the interest of a third country. The message was unmistakable; Budapest would no longer function as an automatic brake on EU measures critical of Israel.

Yet just weeks later the settler sanctions pass, Hungarian FM Orbán delivered one of the clearest pro-Israel statements from any European government following Iran’s renewed assault on the Jewish state. Hungary’s backing of Israel in the face of Iranian aggression signals that Budapest may intends to remain a reliable voice of support for Jerusalem on the international stage.

Related articles:

Hungary’s Foreign Minister Anita Orbán has publicly condemned Iran’s renewed ballistic missile attack on Israel, declaring that Hungary…

[33
49475,3065,5740,49476,49477,423,34,196,37,1663,49478,49,39715,49479,509
post-155443","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-israel","tag-anita-orban","tag-ceasefire","tag-gideon-saar","tag-hungary-israel","tag-hungary-israel-relations","tag-idf","tag-iran","tag-iran-war","tag-israel","tag-israel-defense-forces","tag-maya-kadosh","tag-middle-east","tag-pro-israel","tag-sanction-package","tag-sanctions
["GET
