{"id":156154,"date":"2026-06-11T19:06:43","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T19:06:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/156154\/"},"modified":"2026-06-11T19:06:43","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T19:06:43","slug":"slovenia-lifts-entry-ban-on-netanyahu-and-other-measures-against-israel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/156154\/","title":{"rendered":"Slovenia lifts entry ban on Netanyahu and other measures against Israel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LJUBLJANA, Slovenia (AP) \u2014 Slovenia\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/slovenia-government-jansa-parliament-bed72b46ed591468865a11dc14c52ebb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new conservative government<\/a> on Thursday abolished an entry ban on Israeli Prime Minister <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/slovenia-israel-travel-ban-benjamin-32f77e2f2657fbfd82af7a2b632f2cc0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> and two of his ministers, marking a shift in policies toward Israel that had been pursued by the previous center-left government. <\/p>\n<p>The government of populist Prime Minister <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/slovenia-prime-minister-jansa-right-wing-3ac5ff817e9bae1271216aef5d3ea130\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Janez Jansa<\/a> also lifted a ban on imports from Jewish settlements and ended an embargo on the export and transit of military weapons and equipment to and from Israel, the official STA news agency reported.<\/p>\n<p>Jansa\u2019s government took office earlier this month following a parliamentary election in March. Jansa has said he would seek to improve ties with Israel, in a contrast to the policies of his predecessor, Robert Golob.<\/p>\n<p>Under Golob, Slovenia was one of the most vocal critics of Israel in the European Union. The small Alpine nation recognized a Palestinian state in 2024, before imposing the entry bans in 2025 on <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/france-israel-gaza-flotilla-itamar-bengvir-benjamin-netanyahu-a6c6b4bf6179bd6bc40037b010056ff4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir<\/a>, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Netanyahu.<\/p>\n<p>Ben-Gvir was banned also by France last month. He has sparked <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bengvir-flotilla-gaza-087fa379fa08ae4ddc3a0262b381e3e5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">global outrage<\/a> after promoting a video of himself taunting the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-flotilla-gaza-sumud-deportations-f1101fc45ecf0d384c43e3562c3a1c61\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">activists from a flotilla to Gaza<\/a> who were detained by Israeli police.<\/p>\n<p>The new Slovenian government said in its statement that it was scrapping the punitive measures to open political communication, the official STA news agency reported. The Defense Ministry said that weapons trading is already sufficiently regulated by existing national defense laws and the EU arms export criteria, the same report said. <\/p>\n<p>Political dialogue and quiet diplomacy will help \u201cstrengthen the role of the Republic of Slovenia in the efforts to achieve a lasting peace in the Middle East,\u201d the government said. It cited \u201cactive cooperation\u201d over \u201cactions that limit and close off channels for direct communication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Slovenia linked the entry ban for Netanyahu to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/icc-israel-hamas-warrants-netanyahu-palestinian-arrest-73c854d072e0a1a41b19b2cb2cdd07fa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an arrest warrant<\/a> issued by the International Criminal Court. <\/p>\n<p>Shortly after taking office, Jansa\u2019s government removed a Palestinian flag from the government building, also symbolically marking the policy shift. The country\u2019s embassy in Austrian capital Vienna has previously covered Israel\u2019s diplomatic interests in neighboring Slovenia.<\/p>\n<p>Jansa is serving his fourth term in office. The political veteran is an admirer of U.S. President Donald Trump and was a close ally of former populist Hungarian Prime Minister <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/viktor-orban\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/a>, who was <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hungary-orban-not-take-seat-parliament-164be0a9a221f25db0e66385c9420d23\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">defeated in a landslide election<\/a> in April.<\/p>\n<p>The March 22 election was marred by <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/slovenia-election-influence-allegations-black-cube-jansa-af8c08450f922a669e9b22f146a1026f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">allegations of foreign influence<\/a> and corruption.
