WASHINGTON, June 11 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the Strait of Hormuz would be opened as soon \u200cas a “great settlement” of the war in Iran was signed, \u200can event he said he expected would happen within days.<\/p>\n
“We just made a great settlement \u200bof the war with Iran”, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.<\/p>\n
“The strait will officially open as soon as we sign, which could be soon, very soon, maybe over the weekend in Europe,” he said.<\/p>\n
Trump said he had \u200cjust talked to Israel’s \u2060Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and had also spoken with the leaders of Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, \u2060Kuwait and others. He said he would soon speak to Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan.<\/p>\n
The deal resolved the issue of Iran pursuing the development of a \u200bnuclear weapon, \u200bhe said.<\/p>\n
“Most importantly we have a \u200bdeal that Iran will never \u200chave a nuclear weapon, which was the whole purpose of what we had to go through to get this. So it was a very big thing,” he said<\/p>\n
Trump called off new strikes on Iran earlier on Thursday, saying “final points” of an initial peace deal had been approved and details \u200cof a signing ceremony would be announced \u200bshortly.<\/p>\n
Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported that \u200bTehran was likely to approve \u200bthe agreement though it has yet to give a \u200cformal response. The cancellation of strikes \u200bcame hours after \u200bthe president said the U.S. military would attack Iran for a third consecutive night.<\/p>\n
Since mid-March, Trump has repeatedly claimed that a deal \u200bwith Iran to end \u200cthe war is close. The two sides have traded strikes throughout \u200bthe week, straining a ceasefire announced in April.<\/p>\n
