{"id":157235,"date":"2026-06-12T15:13:07","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T15:13:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/157235\/"},"modified":"2026-06-12T15:13:07","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T15:13:07","slug":"minister-more-water-has-helped-iraqs-ecosystems-but-full-recovery-still-distant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/157235\/","title":{"rendered":"Minister: more water has helped Iraq\u2019s ecosystems, but full recovery still distant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BAGHDAD \u2014 Increased rainfall and water releases have brought partial improvements to Iraq\u2019s natural ecosystems and marshlands this year, but current levels remain insufficient for full environmental recovery, Environment Minister Srwa Abdulwahid said Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Abdulwahid said higher rainfall, floods and releases had contributed to \u201ca relative improvement in reviving natural systems and a number of marshland areas,\u201d but called for cooperation from neighboring countries under humanitarian and legal frameworks governing the equitable sharing of transboundary water resources, saying such cooperation is necessary to protect ecosystems and address drought risks.<\/p>\n<p>She announced plans for a public awareness campaign with government institutions and civil society organizations promoting responsible water use and \u201cabandoning a culture of waste,\u201d and described modern irrigation technologies and efficient water management as \u201cthe optimal solution\u201d for addressing water scarcity and climate change.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s rainfall and storms have boosted strategic reserves by around 6 billion cubic meters, a significant turnaround after reserves dropped to their lowest levels in roughly 80 years in 2025 due to prolonged drought and reduced upstream flows from Turkey and Iran.
