{"id":157912,"date":"2026-06-13T05:16:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-13T05:16:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/157912\/"},"modified":"2026-06-13T05:16:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-13T05:16:08","slug":"ireland-v-israel-government-might-find-it-easier-to-do-the-right-thing-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/157912\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland v Israel: Government might find it easier to do the right thing \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sir, \u2013 There comes a point when the workload of concocting specious arguments against a course of action outweighs the effort of simply doing what needs to be done. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Arguing against widespread demands that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/government\/\">Government<\/a> should cancel the Nations League fixtures against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\/\">Israeli<\/a> atate, Minister for Sport <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/charlie-mcconalogue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/charlie-mcconalogue\/\">Charlie McConalogue<\/a>\u2019s claim that this \u201cwould ultimately mean we would not be in a position to have any athletes participating in the next LA Olympics\u201d sounds a lot like scraping the barrel for pretexts to justify Government inaction (<a href=\"https:\/\/eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.irishtimes.com%2Fpolitics%2F2026%2F06%2F11%2Fboycotting-israel-match-would-mean-not-taking-part-in-2028-olympics-minister-claims%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Clettersed%40irishtimes.com%7C62bfd17c1af84bb2d97408dec866ce2c%7Ce6c8e7dc529047f68b07209934781091%7C0%7C0%7C639168541039179500%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=IUEu5I9QBfuoQYIs8lUOusE3cxsvzLpO%2Bi7TrQgRQEs%3D&amp;reserved=0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Politics, Thurs 11 June<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Elsewhere in this newspaper \u2013 contradicting the Minister\u2019s claims this week that \u201cthis is a matter for the FAI to decide &#8230; It is not appropriate for the Government to interfere here\u201d \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2026\/06\/12\/diarmaid-ferriter-neutral-venue-wont-placate-the-three-in-four-fans-opposed-to-ireland-playing-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2026\/06\/12\/diarmaid-ferriter-neutral-venue-wont-placate-the-three-in-four-fans-opposed-to-ireland-playing-israel\/\">Diarmaid Ferriter<\/a> cites a number of historical instances of government intervention, justified by what the Department of Foreign Affairs termed \u201cour fundamental attitude\u201d to the South African apartheid regime\u2019s \u201cdegrading system\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In 1979, our government conceded that while it valued the independence of sporting organisations, it would take action in \u201cthe most exceptional circumstances\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">If what 86 per cent of the Irish public regard as a genocide in Gaza, compounded by the Israeli state\u2019s invasion and ethnic cleansing of Lebanon, do not qualify as \u201cthe most exceptional circumstances\u201d, I do not know what does.
