{"id":158369,"date":"2026-06-13T15:09:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-13T15:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/158369\/"},"modified":"2026-06-13T15:09:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-13T15:09:08","slug":"baghdad-weapon-control-drive-relies-on-us-iran-deal-shafaq-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/158369\/","title":{"rendered":"Baghdad weapon-control drive relies on US-Iran deal &#8211; Shafaq News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n                            2026-06-13T14:16:25+00:00<\/p>\n<p>                                    font<\/p>\n<p>                                            Enable Reading Mode<\/p>\n<p>\n                                        A-<br \/>\n                                        A<br \/>\n                                        A+\n                                    <\/p>\n<p>Shafaq News- Baghdad<\/p>\n<p>The future of Iraq&#8217;s armed factions will largely depend on<br \/>\nthe outcome of any potential agreement between Iran and the United States,<br \/>\nIraqi lawmaker Mukhtar al-Moussawi remarked on Saturday, as Baghdad intensifies<br \/>\nefforts to bring weapons under state control.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Shafaq News, al-Moussawi, a member of parliament&#8217;s<br \/>\nForeign Relations Committee from the Shiite Badr bloc, led by Hadi Al-Amiri,<br \/>\nindicated that Iraq does not have full control over the matter, pointing to<br \/>\ndivisions within the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) \u2014a predominantly Shiite<br \/>\numbrella force incorporated into the Iraqi state in 2016. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some are prepared to hand over weapons or sever<br \/>\norganizational ties, while others remain firmly opposed,&#8221; he explained,<br \/>\ndescribing the current developments as temporary political arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>The issue, he added, could reemerge in a different form once<br \/>\nthe trajectory of US-Iran relations becomes clearer. &#8220;If an agreement is<br \/>\nreached and signed between both countries, the approach to Iraq&#8217;s weapons file<br \/>\nwill change entirely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Baghdad outlined the first practical<br \/>\nsteps toward integrating armed factions into the state&#8217;s security framework,<br \/>\nbeginning with the <a href=\"https:\/\/shafaq.com\/en\/Security\/Government-committee-receives-Saraya-al-Salam-headquarters-in-Samarra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">transfer<\/a> of facilities and weapons belonging to Saraya<br \/>\nal-Salam of Iraq&#8217;s Patriotic Shiite Movement (PSM).<\/p>\n<p>The move is part of a broader government effort to place<br \/>\nweapons under state authority, backed by the ruling Shiite Coordination<br \/>\nFramework (CF), which recently endorsed Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi&#8217;s plans to<br \/>\nrestructure relations between armed groups and the state.<\/p>\n<p>Iran-backed armed groups Asaib Ahl al-Haq and Kataib Imam<br \/>\nAli have previously introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/shafaq.com\/en\/Iraq\/PM-Al-Zaidi-Iraqi-armed-factions-set-48-hour-deadline-for-arms-curbs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">measures<\/a> aimed at reorganizing their forces and<br \/>\naligning them with the government&#8217;s weapons-control initiative.
