A proposed agreement<\/a> between the United States and Iran moved closer on Sunday, with President Donald Trump declaring that a framework deal was scheduled for signing, while Iranian officials insisted key decisions remained under review.<\/p>\n

The competing statements underscored the uncertainty surrounding negotiations that have sought to end months of illegal US-Israeli war against Iran. Mediators from Pakistan and Qatar continued diplomatic efforts as military activity persisted in Lebanon, where Israeli forces carried out fresh strikes despite expectations of a broader regional de-escalation.<\/p>\n

Trump claimed on his Truth Social platform that the agreement would be signed on Sunday and said the Strait of Hormuz would reopen immediately after the deal entered into force.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Pakistan, which has played a central role in mediation efforts, also signalled progress. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said preparations were under way for an electronic signing ceremony followed by technical discussions in the coming week.<\/p>\n

Iranian officials struck a more cautious tone. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said a signing was unlikely to take place on Sunday, although he acknowledged that an agreement remained possible in the coming days. Iran’s Fars News Agency later reported that political, legal and technical reviews of the proposed memorandum were still under consideration by senior decision-makers.<\/p>\n

A delegation from Doha arrived in Tehran on Sunday for meetings with Iranian officials. Iranian media reported that the talks focused on advancing negotiations and addressing remaining obstacles before a final decision.<\/p>\n

The framework agreement would focus initially on ending hostilities and restoring maritime access through the Strait of Hormuz. Discussions on Iran’s nuclear programme would follow during a separate negotiating phase expected to last around 60 days.<\/p>\n

US officials have indicated that sanctions relief and access to frozen Iranian assets would depend on Iranian compliance with the agreement. Reuters reported that draft terms under discussion include the release of billions of dollars in frozen Iranian funds and the easing of restrictions on oil exports.<\/p>\n

Iranian officials have publicly linked any agreement to the release of frozen assets and broader economic relief. Tehran has also argued that future arrangements for the Strait of Hormuz should include compensation for services provided along the route.<\/p>\n

Trump has presented the emerging accord as a decisive break from the 2015 nuclear agreement negotiated under President Barack Obama. He said the proposed framework would prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and described it as the opposite of what he characterised as weaknesses in the earlier deal.<\/p>\n

The president also suggested that highly enriched uranium stockpiles would eventually be removed and destroyed following further negotiations.<\/p>\n

Iran has continued to explain that its nuclear programme serves civilian purposes. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said this week that Tehran favours diluting enriched uranium while keeping it inside the country rather than transferring it abroad.<\/p>\n

While negotiators worked towards an agreement, Israel intensified operations in southern Lebanon on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Lebanese media reported air strikes in multiple locations including areas near Nabatieh, Jezzine and Bint Jbeil.<\/p>\n

The Israeli military claims the actions were a response to Hezbollah activity, including drone launches towards northern Israel. Israeli officials reported that several drones crossed from Lebanon in recent days, with some crashing inside Israeli territory.<\/p>\n

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has tried to insist that Israel is not a party to the US-Iran negotiations, and Israeli leaders say that military operations against Hezbollah would continue.<\/p>\n

Iranian negotiators have argued that any ceasefire arrangement must also address Israel’s strikes and illegal occupation in Lebanon.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Friday, Araghchi said the proposed memorandum would end hostilities “on all fronts”, including Lebanon. Iranian officials have described the agreement as a first step towards broader security arrangements across the region.<\/p>\n

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian marked the first anniversary of last year’s conflict with Israel by saying that the war strengthened national unity and failed to achieve its objectives. Other senior Iranian officials said the country emerged from the conflict with greater resolve despite damage inflicted by US and Israeli military operations.<\/p>\n
