We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/iran-us-war-live-trump-peace-deal-oil-strait-of-hormuz-b2995645.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">newly unveiled peace deal immediately came under strain on Monday<\/a> as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/israel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israel<\/a> appeared to defy Washington\u2019s pledges to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran<\/a> to end the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly four months after the US and Israel launched strikes at Iran, Trump and Iranian officials said a memorandum of understanding had been agreed and the blocked Strait of Hormuz could open up as soon as Friday.<\/p>\n<p>But as global markets responded positively to the news and Trump insisted that boats were on the move in the choked shipping channel, Israel threw doubt on the deal.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli defence minister Israel Katz, whose country was not part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/us\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US<\/a>-Iranian agreement, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/trump-iran-ceasefire-israel-netanyahu-b2995788.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its military would remain in Lebanon <\/a>\u201cwithout any time limit\u201d, putting it on a collision course with the US ahead of sensitive talks with Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei insisted that Lebanon remained \u201can integral part of the agreement to end the war with the US\u201d, adding that the agreed draft agreement called for an end to the war on all fronts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2026-06-15T064751Z_438398647_RC26ULADL8QX_RTRMADP_3_IRAN-CRISIS-LEBANON-ISRAEL.JPG\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Smoke rises following an Israeli strike in Nabatieh, Lebanon, June 15\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Smoke rises following an Israeli strike in Nabatieh, Lebanon, June 15 (Reuters)<\/p>\n<p>Israeli prime minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/benjamin-netanyahu\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> has yet to respond publicly to the deal, which emerges only a week after Iran launched missiles at Israel over its conduct in Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s hawkish national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir insisted on Monday that his country \u201cmust not compromise on anything less than the dismantling of Hezbollah\u201d or withdraw from captured territory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy position is clear: We are not partners to this agreement that does not ensure our security, and it does not bind us in any way,\u201d he wrote on social media.<\/p>\n<p>One senior Israeli official said on condition of anonymity that the agreement was \u201cterrible for Israel\u201d, an assessment they indicated was shared throughout the government from Netanyahu down.<\/p>\n<p>A Lebanese security source told state media on Monday afternoon that an Israeli drone strike on a car in south Lebanon had killed the vehicle\u2019s driver in what would mark the first deadly Israeli attack since the announcement of the US-Iran agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Hezbollah welcomed the MOU and claimed it had not carried out any operations since Sunday.
