{"id":161367,"date":"2026-06-15T17:02:15","date_gmt":"2026-06-15T17:02:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/161367\/"},"modified":"2026-06-15T17:02:15","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T17:02:15","slug":"syrian-sentenced-to-26-years-in-prison-by-dutch-court-for-crimes-against-humanity-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/161367\/","title":{"rendered":"Syrian sentenced to 26 years in prison by Dutch court for crimes against humanity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \">THE HAGUE, Netherlands &#8212; A <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/syria\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Syrian<\/a> national accused of crimes against humanity was sentenced on Monday to 26 years in prison by a Dutch court for the torture and rape of imprisoned opponents of the government of former president Bashar Assad during the civil war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The man, identified only as Rafiq al Q. due to Dutch privacy regulations, <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/netherlands-syria-civil-war-torture-trial-crimes-c0bebe3fce7f89c8d15313e9c1ae6dbf?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">went on trial<\/a> in April facing charges including torture, sexual abuse and rape. The 58-year-old denied being involved and accused alleged victims and police of conspiring against him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The sentence handed down by the District Court of The Hague is the latest against Syrian suspects in different countries since Assad was toppled from power in a decisive rebel offensive in December 2024 that followed years of grinding civil war. Assad <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/syria-assad-sweida-daraa-homs-hts-qatar-816e538565d1ae47e016b5765b044d31\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fled Syria<\/a> to longtime ally Russia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The cases have cast light on the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ap.org\/news-highlights\/spotlights\/2025\/long-silenced-by-fear-syrians-now-speak-about-rampant-torture-under-assad\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">widespread killings and abuse<\/a> in dozens of detention centers across Syria while Assad was in power. Torture, brutality, sexual violence and mass executions were rampant, according to activists, rights group and former prisoners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The judges ruled that Rafiq al Q. was a member of the pro-Assad National Defense Force and between 2013 and 2014 worked as an interrogator for the paramilitary group during Syria\u2019s civil war. They said that saying evidence showed he was responsible for torturing people held at detention centers in Salamiyah, including beating them, suspending them upside down and administering electric shocks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThe defendant was also guilty of sexually abusing multiple victims. He raped one of them,\u201d the court said in a summary of its verdict. \u201cThe defendant repeatedly subjected the victims to conditions of extreme fear, threats, pain, hopelessness, and powerlessness. During the court hearings, the victims gave compelling testimonies about the impact this had on them and the consequences they continue to suffer to this day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Wearing a striped shirt and sitting next to his lawyer with guards standing nearby, Rafiq al Q. appeared to make no comment as he was convicted and sentenced. He was acquitted on a number of charges where judges ruled there was insufficient evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Rafiq al Q. claimed asylum in the Netherlands in 2021 and was living in the eastern town of Druten when he was arrested in 2023. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">His trial was based on universal jurisdiction, a legal principle that allows suspects to be prosecuted for international offenses such as war crimes even if they are committed in another country. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Prosecutors and the defendant have 14 days to appeal the conviction and sentence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The Dutch are not alone in prosecuting Syrians linked to the former Assad government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Last year, a <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-syria-verdict-doctor-torture-war-crimes-68f0d04ab66f82df6a032434c631c498?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">German court<\/a> sentenced a Syrian doctor to life imprisonment for torture and war crimes in his Syrian homeland on Monday for killing two people and torturing nine in <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/syria\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Syria<\/a> between 2011 and 2012. And in 2024, a <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/france-syria-war-crimes-trial-28812234653070e6f563dcf5c2b702e7?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paris court<\/a> sentenced three high-ranking Syrian officials in absentia to life in prison for complicity in war crimes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Syria also is seeking justice for crimes by officials loyal to Assad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC eTIW sUzSN \">In April, the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/syria-trial-transitional-justice-assad-atef-najib-aff2f6c36a44d85006be6a15a4d6447f?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first public trial<\/a> opened in Damascus of former government officials.
