June 16 (Reuters) – Shipowners will not resume transit through the Strait of Hormuz for weeks until they are confident \u200cthat the U.S.-Iran peace deal is “material”, the CEO of \u200cJapan’s Mitsui O.S.K. Lines told the Financial Times in an interview published on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The \u200bwar, which began in late February, has largely halted shipping through the key route for around a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supply, along with products such as aluminum and \u200curea.<\/p>\n
“Given the experiences in \u2060the last couple of months, I think it\u2019s reasonable to assume that it may take at least \u2060a couple of weeks or if not a month,” Jotaro Tamura told FT, before U.S. President Donald Trump announced a deal to end \u200bthe \u200bwar in Iran.<\/p>\n
The agreement between Washington \u200band Tehran has not \u200cchanged Tamura’s view, the FT report said.<\/p>\n
“We recognize that there are signs of movement toward a ceasefire. However, operations will not be resumed until safety has been sufficiently confirmed,” Mitsui O.S.K. said in an emailed statement to Reuters.<\/p>\n
“The resumption of transit will require close \u200ccoordination with the governments of the \u200brelevant countries, insurers, and other stakeholders,” the \u200bJapanese shipping giant added.<\/p>\n
Mitsui \u200bO.S.K., one of Japan\u2019s three biggest shipping firms, has \u200ca fleet of more than \u200b900 vessels, including \u200bbulk carriers, tankers and ferries.<\/p>\n
Trump in a Truth Social post on Monday said that ships loaded with oil are starting \u200bto move out of \u200cthe strait, “going along the Southern ‘Highway,’ which is totally safe, \u200bsecure, and pristine”.<\/p>\n
