We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>A New York City coffee shop is facing a Department of Justice investigation after banning a congressman over his views on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/israel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israel<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Poetica Coffee posted a photo of NY-10 Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/daniel-goldman\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dan Goldman<\/a> at the Brooklyn outlet, with a caustic post saying they would have turned him away if they had recognized him at the time. <\/p>\n<p>The post, which has since been taken down, read: \u201cHey Congressman Dan Goldman, we see that you stopped by our shop today for a coffee. Do you see how it doesn\u2019t taste like genocide juice? Or are you still having a hard time telling the difference?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSee, here at Poetica, we don\u2019t serve racists, fascists, homophobes, genocide enablers, or anyone in between. Too bad we didn\u2019t recognize you right away, or we would have turned you away. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe issued you a refund\u2014we don\u2019t need your money (it\u2019s probably coming from AIPAC anyways). Don\u2019t ever come to Poetica.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/729589778_18100845401141671_3870909082252356745_n-copy.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Poetica shared a picture of Rep Dan Goldman in the coffee shop\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Poetica shared a picture of Rep Dan Goldman in the coffee shop (Facebook\/Poetica Coffee &#8211; Lorimer Street)<\/p>\n<p>This incident is now being investigated by the Department of Justice (DOJ)\u2019s civil rights division. <\/p>\n<p>Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AAGDhillon\/status\/2069174058143420627?s=20\">posted<\/a> to X on Monday: \u201cFederal law prohibits public accommodations such as coffee shops from discriminating against patrons based on their race, religion, or national origin. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese actions are not only reprehensible, they\u2019re potentially illegal. The Civil Rights Division has opened an investigation, and will bring an enforcement action if warranted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep Goldman said the coffee shop\u2019s attack was \u201ca sad state of affairs\u201d, adding that he had been treated well by staff at the time of his visit. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2278515879...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Goldman was told not to never return due to his views on Israel\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Goldman was told not to never return due to his views on Israel (Getty)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had such a nice interaction with the barista in the coffee shop,\u201d Goldman told CNN. \u201cShe was wearing a hijab, I didn\u2019t know her, but she couldn\u2019t have been nicer and allowed my daughter to go use the bathroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI honestly was so grateful for her kindness that I felt like I should buy a coffee, and so I did, and I gave her a large tip. It\u2019s a reflection, I think, of a sad state of affairs that without knowing me, we could have had such a nice interaction.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Goldman, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/dan-goldman-new-york-rent-lawsuit-b2460100.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a Levi Strauss heir<\/a>, is facing a primary for his seat June 23, where polling suggests he will lose to another Jewish candidate, Mamdani-backed Brad Lander. <\/p>\n<p>Both Lander and Goldman\u2019s views on Israel have been focal points of their campaigns.
