Dan Goldman after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/news\/brooklyn-coffee-shop-brushes-off-dan-goldman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">employees rescinded service<\/a> to him based on his political views.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Protestors stood behind police barriers set up within a large radius on a sunny June 24 morning near Poetica\u2019s Williamsburg location to tell the shop and its owner, Parviz Mukhamadkulov, that they \u201cwill never quietly accept racist discrimination\u201d against Jews.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this kind of discrimination becomes normal, it will not stop with one customer or one coffee shop,\u201d a spokesperson for #EndJewHatred said. \u201cRacism is wrong. Antisemitism is wrong. REUTERS\/Eduardo Munoz\n<\/p>\n<p>The protest came just days after Goldman purchased a coffee at the shop while campaigning to maintain his seat representing parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn, which he wound up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brooklynpaper.com\/brad-lander-beats-dan-goldman-ny10-primary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">losing to former City Comptroller Brad Lander<\/a> in the primary election on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Poetica posted on social media that staffers had digitally refunded Goldman nearly $10 for his coffee, once they recognized who he was.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo bad we didn\u2019t recognize you right away, or we would have turned you away,\u201d part of the lengthy post read. \u201cWe issued you a refund\u2014we don\u2019t need your money (it\u2019s probably coming from AIPAC anyways). Enjoy your loss on Tuesday. REUTERS\/Eduardo Munoz<\/p>\n<p>Members of #EndJewHatred \u2013 which is both an organization and a movement \u2013 said the Poetica Coffee incident with Goldman is indicative of a broader trend of hostility toward Jewish people and supporters of Israel. <\/p>\n<p>Demonstrators called on businesses to serve customers regardless of their personal political beliefs and opinions. Goldman has been one of the strongest pro-Israel voices among New York Democrats in Congress, and has not strayed from supporting Israel\u2019s right to defend itself against terrorists.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his strong stance on protecting Israel, he has also called for safe zones and <a href=\"https:\/\/goldman.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/congressman-dan-goldman-leads-call-egypt-facilitate-safe-zones-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">humanitarian aid<\/a> to civilians in Gaza during the Israel-Hamas war that led to a conflict, leaving thousands of people dead.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Goldman spoke about his Poetica experience with CNN\u2019s Laura Coates. He said he had a \u201cnice\u201d encounter with the staffer who served him, but said the experience was a reflection on a sad state of affairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is going on in the Middle East is horrific. The idea of accusing someone you don\u2019t know of supporting a genocide, it\u2019s crazy,\u201d the Congress member said. \u201cNow, I may disagree as to whether or not there is a genocide, but come on. We are better than this. REUTERS\/Eduardo Munoz<\/p>\n<p>The controversy has drawn strong opinions on social media, where supporters of Goldman criticized Poetic\u2019s actions while others defended the shop\u2019s move as a form of political expression.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t a big Dan Goldman fan, but the way he handled this bigoted hatred with class and generosity has me reconsidering him,\u201d was one of many pro-Goldman messages.\n<\/p>\n<p>Support for Poetica has been growing online, too.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll money isn\u2019t good money. I applaud you for upholding your morals,\u201d was one comment on Poetica\u2019s social media page.\n<\/p>\n<p>Many commenters also poked fun at Goldman getting a free $10 coffee.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell that\u2019s an easy free coffee,\u201d one poster said. Another person added, \u201cIf I come in and say I support Dan, can I get a free coffee?\u2019\n<\/p>\n<p>Civil rights attorney from #EndJewHatred, Brooke Goldstein, spotlighted the NYPD during the protest and claimed Mayor Zohran Mamdani was not doing enough to support the department.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that while the mayor wants to defund you, we will never let that happen,\u201d she said. Since becoming mayor, however, Mamdani has not publicly called to \u201cdefund\u201d the NYPD; he has <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/nypd-set-to-hire-580-extra-cops-under-mayor-mamdanis-latest-budget\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">signed off on hiring nearly 600 additional officers<\/a> as the NYPD continues to bolster its headcount amid a wave of retirements.
