{"id":176716,"date":"2026-06-25T08:47:27","date_gmt":"2026-06-25T08:47:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/176716\/"},"modified":"2026-06-25T08:47:27","modified_gmt":"2026-06-25T08:47:27","slug":"switzerland-in-talks-with-israel-france-south-korea-to-buy-air-defense-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/176716\/","title":{"rendered":"Switzerland in talks with Israel, France, South Korea to buy air defense systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Switzerland said Wednesday it was negotiating with France, Israel and South Korea to acquire a long-range air defense system, amid lengthy delays in delivery of US Patriot missiles.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement came after Bern in early March said it would examine the acquisition of an additional long-range surface-to-air missile system, preferably manufactured in Europe, to complement the Patriot system.<\/p>\n<p>The Swiss defense ministry is \u201cinitiating contract negotiations with French, Israeli and South Korean manufacturers to acquire an additional system that would allow for the rapid strengthening of defenses against long-range attacks,\u201d the government said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The statement did not say which systems Switzerland could look to buy.<\/p>\n<p>Israel produces two air defense systems that rival the US-made Patriot system, namely the Arrow and David\u2019s Sling, both of which were developed in joint ventures between Israeli state-owned firms and US defense giants. (US Army photo)<\/p>\n<p>The government said \u201ca second system would reduce reliance on a single supplier and a single supply chain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Switzerland, which is not in NATO, had ordered five Patriot systems in 2022, with delivery scheduled to begin this year and completed in 2028.<\/p>\n<p>But Bern suspended payments last year after it was informed of significant delays in deliveries.<\/p>\n<p>It indicated Wednesday it had decided to stick with its decision to purchase the Patriots and would resume payments despite its estimates that the deliveries would likely be delayed by four to five years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue to the security situation,\u201d the government \u201ccannot consider halting this acquisition programmed without having a replacement system in place,\u201d it said, adding that it would also \u201cbe difficult to assess the costs such a halt would entail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, \u201cpayments for the Patriot system are resuming so that the project can move forward with minimal delay and without excessive additional costs,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>Back in March, the Swiss government said the United States had circumvented the freeze on its payments for the Patriot system by dipping into Swiss payments into the same fund but intended for its purchase of a fleet of F-35A fighter jets.<\/p>\n<p>The government also said at the time that it wanted to buy only 30 F-35A fighter jets, instead of the 36 ordered, after Washington last year hiked the price tag, citing high inflation and surging raw material and energy prices.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\tWe can&#8217;t do this work alone.\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"200\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Untitled-design-4-200x200.jpg\" class=\"attachment-square size-square wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\"\/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The war with Iran has been draining for all of us in Israel.
