LONDON, June 25 (Reuters) – The United Nations\u2019 shipping agency on Thursday paused an evacuation effort \u200bto get hundreds of stranded ships \u200cand thousands of seafarers out through the Strait of Hormuz after a vessel was attacked \u200bin the Gulf of Oman.<\/p>\n

“I have \u200bbeen informed of an attack today \u2060in the Gulf of Oman on \u200ba vessel which passed through the Strait \u200bof Hormuz. This vessel did not transit under IMO\u2019s evacuation framework,” Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the \u200bU.N.’s International Maritime Organization (IMO), said in \u200ba statement.<\/p>\n

“I have decided to temporarily pause its implementation \u200cin \u2060order to reconfirm that the necessary safety guarantees continue to be in place for the ships on our evacuation list \u200band all \u200bthose \u2060in the region.”<\/p>\n

The initiative, which was launched on Tuesday, was a \u200bvoluntary option for ships and \u200btheir \u2060crew to sail out of the Gulf using two routes \u2013 one via Iranian waters \u2060and \u200bthe other via Omani \u200bwaters, with U.S. oversight, the IMO said this week.<\/p>\n
