FIFA will let Seattle host its planned \u201cPride Match\u201d on Friday, celebrating the city\u2019s LGBTQ Pride Week that coincides with the 2026 World Cup\u2014even though both participants Egypt and Iran impose harsh legal penalties for homosexuality in their countries.<\/p>\n

In a statement sent to multiple<\/a> outlets<\/a>, FIFA said the World Cup is an \u201cinclusive event \u2060that welcomes people from all backgrounds,\u201d adding it would permit the display of \u201cgeneral statements of human rights, \u200bincluding rainbow flags and other flags representing sexual orientation and gender identity.\u201d<\/p>\n Both the Egyptians and Iranians have protested the match, with the Egyptian National Football Team issuing a statement in December<\/a> \u201ccategorically rejecting any activities related to supporting homosexuality during the match.\u201d<\/p>\n In a separate statement sent to The Athletic<\/a>, the Iranian team said \u201cno ceremonies, or promotional activities associated with this movement should be present inside the stadium or as part of the match environment,\u201d and that FIFA should \u201ctake into account\u201d their \u201cviews and concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n FIFA president Gianni Infantino previously denied the \u201cPride Match\u201d would take place, insisting to a Swiss magazine<\/a> in January that \u201con the same day, events organised by external organizations will be taking place in the city. But that has nothing to do with the match itself.\u201d<\/p>\n Homosexual Acts Criminalized In Both Countries<\/p>\n Iran and Egypt are both Muslim-majority countries that criminalize homosexualtiy. Same-sex activity between both men and women is illegal in Iran, and is punishable by 100 lashes for each partner, according to a report from watchdog group Human Dignity Trust<\/a>. Iran also approves the death penalty for some people convicted. Egypt criminalizes \u201c\u2018indecency\u2019, \u2018scandalous acts\u2019, and \u2018debauchery,\u2019\u201d according to the organization<\/a>, which is enforced to penalize the LGBTQ population. Those convicted can face jail sentences and fines.<\/p>\n Key Background<\/p>\n Friday\u2019s match will be critical for both teams as they seek to advance to the next round of the tournament. Egypt wins Group G if it beats Iran, while Iran would almost certainly advance to the round of 32 with a win and be eliminated if it loses.
