{"id":177753,"date":"2026-06-25T23:30:32","date_gmt":"2026-06-25T23:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/177753\/"},"modified":"2026-06-25T23:30:32","modified_gmt":"2026-06-25T23:30:32","slug":"carney-says-canada-should-reopen-embassies-in-iran-and-venezuela","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/177753\/","title":{"rendered":"Carney says Canada should reopen embassies in Iran and Venezuela"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TORONTO (AP) \u2014 Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday Canada should reopen its embassies in Iran and Venezuela that his predecessors closed.<\/p>\n<p>Carney argued the lack of a diplomatic presence hampers Ottawa\u2019s ability to help Canadians abroad and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/venezuela-earthquake-caracas-rodriguez-aid-0a62e6fc9feb5202a750c4fbb11a6aec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">respond to humanitarian crises<\/a> despite deep disagreements with the two governments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEngagement is not endorsement,\u201d Carney said. \u201cHaving an embassy, having consular services in a country, does not mean we endorse the policies of that country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carney said not having a diplomatic presence creates challenges, citing Venezuela where Canada could be providing more immediate earthquake assistance.. <\/p>\n<p>He stressed a decision has not been made but said it needs to change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoving towards that, in my judgement, a decision to be made, is what we need to do,\u201d Carney said of reopening the embassies. <\/p>\n<p>Former Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper shut Canada\u2019s embassy in Tehran in 2012, severing diplomatic relations and ordering Iranian diplomats to leave, accusing the Islamic Republic of being the most significant threat to world peace.<\/p>\n<p>Canada suspended operations at its embassy in Venezuela in 2019, saying the regime of then Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro regime would not renew visas for its diplomats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are series of countries with whom we don\u2019t see eye to eye, to put it mildly, where we don\u2019t have representation in the country,\u201d Carney said. \u201cAnd that puts us as a disadvantage, first and foremost, to helping Canadians that are in these countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carney said on one level there\u2019s very good reasons for that, but it means Canada is not fulfilling a basic responsibility of government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a humanitarian crisis in Venezuela and there is a need to act very quickly so in my opinion we must change the way we are doing things,\u201d Carney said. <\/p>\n<p>Carney also said <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-carney-europe-macron-france-ireland-g7-261560d8bcff5e46074e84120848fd37\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. President Donald Trump<\/a> called him on Wednesday to discuss the NATO summit next month as well as the situation in Iran and the Middle East.
