{"id":177881,"date":"2026-06-26T02:02:18","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T02:02:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/177881\/"},"modified":"2026-06-26T02:02:18","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T02:02:18","slug":"movement-through-strait-of-hormuz-is-halted-after-attack-on-cargo-ship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/177881\/","title":{"rendered":"Movement Through Strait of Hormuz Is Halted After Attack on Cargo Ship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Iran\u2019s military struck a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, according to a U.S. official, undermining efforts to restore shipping traffic through the crucial waterway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">The ship, the Ever Lovely, was attacked after Iran agreed last week to let shipping pass through the strait safely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">The strike, which took place when the ship was near the coast of Oman, prompted a United Nations agency, the International Maritime Organization, to pause <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/06\/23\/world\/middleeast\/imo-persian-gulf-stranded-ships.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an evacuation<\/a> of hundreds of ships that had been stranded in the Persian Gulf during the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Arsenio Dominguez, the secretary general of the maritime organization, did not name the attacked ship in a news release Thursday, but said it was not part of the agency\u2019s evacuation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">In recent days, ship traffic through the strait surged as shipping companies calculated that the waterway had become safer after the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding last week to try to find a lasting peace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Around 70 vessels transited the waterway on Wednesday, including 29 tankers, making it the busiest day since March 1, the day after the war began, according to Kpler, a maritime data company. But earlier Thursday, the naval arm of Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps said in a statement that only routes announced by Iran were authorized, warning ships against using any other corridor. Many ships have been using a route on the southern side of the strait, hugging the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/06\/23\/business\/iran-strait-hormuz-oil-shipping-traffic.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Omani coast<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">The Ever Lovely is owned by Evergreen Marine, a large shipping company based in Taiwan, according to Equasis, a ship data base.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-f3337s erlrjdy0\">Jenny Gross and Rebecca F.
