FIFA<\/a> says fans will be allowed to display rainbow flags at Friday\u2019s World Cup<\/a> match between Egypt and Iran in Seattle, <\/a>despite objections from both countries, where homosexuality is criminalized.<\/p>\n

The Group G match falls during Seattle\u2019s annual Pride weekend and was designated a \u201cPride Match\u201d by the city\u2019s local World Cup organizing committee long before December\u2019s tournament draw paired the two Muslim-majority nations.<\/p>\n

Following the draw, both football federations objected to the designation. Egypt\u2019s Football Association said Pride-related activities conflicted with the country\u2019s cultural and religious values. <\/p>\n

According to The Athletic, Iran\u2019s federation requested that \u201cno ceremonies or promotional activities associated with this movement should be present inside the stadium.\u201d Iran\u2019s federation did not respond to Reuters\u2019 requests for comment.<\/p>\n

FIFA confirmed Thursday that rainbow flags will be permitted inside Lumen Field, saying the World Cup is \u201can inclusive event that welcomes people from all backgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGeneral statements of human rights, including rainbow flags and other flags representing sexual orientation and gender identity, are permitted … and may be displayed inside stadiums,\u201d FIFA said.<\/p>\n

At the same time, FIFA emphasized that the Pride celebrations are organized by Seattle\u2019s local host committee rather than the governing body itself. FIFA President Gianni Infantino said earlier this year that while Pride events would coincide with the match, \u201cthat has nothing to do with the match itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

The issue has drawn attention because of the competing teams\u2019 records on LGBTQ+ rights. In Iran, same-sex relations are illegal and men have faced execution on sodomy charges. Egypt has prosecuted LGBTQ+ people and cracked down on public displays of Pride, including the use of rainbow flags.<\/p>\n

Seattle organizers say the match is an opportunity to showcase the city\u2019s longstanding commitment to inclusion.<\/p>\n

Patti Hearn, executive director of Seattle Pride, said the rainbow flag represents human rights and inclusivity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe rainbow flag or any of the Pride flags are just a symbol of inclusivity, of community, of love \u2014 and that really isn’t offensive,\u201d Hearn told Reuters.<\/p>\n

She acknowledged the objections from Egypt and Iran but said the event sends an important message.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are queer people everywhere,\u201d she said. \u201cIf we can provide the opportunity for the world stage to see and experience what it feels like to be in a welcoming and inclusive place … I think that’s great.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bookda Gheisar, an Iranian American lesbian and diversity director at the Port of Seattle, said the moment carries deep personal significance.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe challenge of that contradiction has been a struggle of my own personal life for 40 years,\u201d Gheisar said. \u201cI’m certainly not alone in that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Seattle officials stressed that Pride celebrations have been part of the city for decades and are not being created specifically for the tournament.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Pride celebration … has happened on this weekend for 50-plus years,\u201d said Hedda McLendon of Seattle\u2019s World Cup organizing committee. \u201cIt is going to happen this weekend, it is going to happen long after the World Cup.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ilona Lohrey, president and CEO of the Greater Seattle Business Association, called Seattle one of the country\u2019s most inclusive cities.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it gives us an opportunity to showcase who we are as a city, who we are as a people and how diversity makes us stronger,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Seattle Reign captain Jess Fishlock said the World Cup provides a unique opportunity to celebrate diversity.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think there is a sport that has a global event that creates unity and diversity … quite like the World Cup,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Both teams have sought to keep attention on football rather than the Pride celebrations.<\/p>\n

Before Iran\u2019s pre-match news conference on Thursday, FIFA public relations executive Daniel Marin read a statement saying the Iranian delegation would answer only football-related questions. Coach Amir Ghalenoei later repeated that his team\u2019s \u201centire focus\u201d was on the match.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are here to play football. For nothing else,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Egypt took a similar approach, with team officials preventing players from answering Pride-related questions. Coach Hossam Hassan said, \u201cWe are all focused on football,\u201d adding that his team respected \u201cfair play and rules for everybody to abide by.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iran has also faced travel complications during the tournament due to U.S. restrictions tied to geopolitical tensions. <\/p>\n

Several support staff members were initially unable to enter the United States, and the team had been required to fly in shortly before previous matches and return immediately afterward. Restrictions were eased ahead of the Seattle match, allowing Iran to arrive two days early.<\/p>\n
