Traffic via the strait has dropped by 97 per cent since the war against Iran began on February 28, according to UN data.

Iran has used similar tactics before. In the “Tanker War” of the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq conflict, attacks on vessels turned the Gulf into one of the world’s most dangerous waterways, forcing Washington to escort tankers through the strait.

But Iran now wields far more potent tools, including large arsenals of cheap missiles and drones capable of threatening shipping across a far wider area. Its attacks this month have shown how quickly Tehran can disrupt traffic through the strait without heavily mining it.

Long before the US and Israel attacked Iran, the Islamic Republic had devised its own weapon: holding the…

[28
799,773,6453,38,359,102,34,94,5484,37,93,9181,101,95,69,1705
0":"post-17891","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-strait-of-hormuz","8":"tag-afghanistan","9":"tag-ali-larijani","10":"tag-ali-vaez","11":"tag-donald-trump","12":"tag-gulf","13":"tag-hormuz","14":"tag-iran","15":"tag-iraq","16":"tag-islamic-revolutionary-guards-corps","17":"tag-israel","18":"tag-lebanon","19":"tag-mohammad-baqer-qalibaf","20":"tag-strait-of-hormuz","21":"tag-syria","22":"tag-tehran","23":"tag-washington
["GET
