“Nothing has been cancelled. Iran\u2019s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that the responsibility for the Strait of Hormuz lies solely with Tehran and warned that any attempt to bypass its preferred route in the waterway will cause \u201ctension and escalation\u201d. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis responsibility rests on the Islamic Republic of Iran. There is no other party or state in this respect. This is totally clear under the memorandum of understanding, and any intervention or any unilateral action will result in exacerbating the situation and also delay the reopening of the strait.\u201d <\/p>\n
How did it start? <\/p>\n
The hostilities began last this week after Iran attacked the Singapore-flagged cargo vessel M\/V Ever Lovely with a one-way attack drone on June 25 while it was exiting the Strait of Hormuz along the Omani coast. Trump called the attack a “foolish” violation of the ceasefire, and the US military said it struck Iranian missile and drone storage facilities in response over two days. <\/p>\n
Iran attacks Kuwait, Bahrain <\/p>\n
Iranian forces also responded on Sunday by attacking its Gulf neighbours Kuwait and Bahrain. Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said they launched missiles and drones at the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and the 5th Fleet naval base in Salman Port, Bahrain, according to Bloomberg. <\/p>\n
Kuwait said it intercepted two missiles and there was no material damage or injuries. Bahrain’s Interior Ministry said a residential building sustained heavy damage in an overnight Iranian attack. Later in the day, Qatar’s Interior Ministry said a Qatari citizen aboard a vessel was killed after suffering shrapnel injuries resulting from “the military operations in the area.” <\/p>\n

Brent crude futures climbed 45 cents, or 0.6%, to $72.44 a barrel at 0627 GMT while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was at $70.05 a barrel, up 82 cents, or 1.2%.<\/p>\n
“There’s still plenty of risk facing the oil market. Even so, participants appear to be … focusing on what a continued recovery in oil flows would mean for the global balance,” ING analysts said in a note on Monday.<\/p>\n
“This complacency is odd and clearly leaves significant upside risk if the supply recovery proves slow.”<\/p>\n
Brent crude fell 10.6% last week, its third weekly decline, after crude shipments through the strait rose last week to their highest level since the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran began in late February.<\/p>\n
However, traffic has since slowed following renewed attacks on ships in the strait from Thursday, including a Qatar-linked oil tanker, that triggered strikes from the U.S. and Iran in the worst escalation since they signed an interim peace deal.<\/p>\n
