{"id":18414,"date":"2026-03-13T22:36:05","date_gmt":"2026-03-13T22:36:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/18414\/"},"modified":"2026-03-13T22:36:05","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T22:36:05","slug":"concern-grows-over-german-turkish-journalists-missing-in-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/18414\/","title":{"rendered":"Concern grows over German, Turkish journalists missing in Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n      The journalists disappeared after government troops captured Raqqa from Kurdish-led forces [Getty]<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Concern is growing over the fate of two journalists who went missing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/news\/syrian-army-captures-city-tabqa-sdf-advances-raqqa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Syrian city of Raqqa<\/a> on January 18, the day it was captured by Syrian government troops from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/analysis\/what-sdf-integration-means-future-syrias-army\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">German journalist Eva Maria Michelmann and Kurdish-Turkish journalist Ahmed Polad went missing while covering developments on the ground. They were working for the po-Kurdish Turkish socialist Etkin News Agency (ETHA) and Ozgur TV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On Wednesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/news\/cpj-says-israel-starving-gazan-journalists-silence\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Committee to Protect Journalists<\/a>\u00a0(CPJ) called on Syrian authorities to disclose their whereabouts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It said that they were last seen fleeing a government building affiliated with Raqqa\u2019s former Kurdish-led authorities with civilians from the city, but were separated from the crowd by government forces and placed in a vehicle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe disappearance of Eva Maria Michelmann and Ahmed Polad in Raqqa raises serious concerns about the safety of journalists working in Syria,\u201d Joud Hasan, CPJ\u2019s Levant Programme Coordinator, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cSyrian authorities must urgently shed light on what has happened to the journalists, including whether they have been detained, and guarantee their safety,\u201d Hasan added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">However, a source in the Syrian Ministry of Information told The New Arab on Friday that the ministry has been following the case and trying to determine the journalists\u2019 location since it learned of their disappearance two days ago, but has so far obtained no information about them. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The source added that the ministry continues to search for any clues that could lead to information about the journalists\u2019 fate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Serpil Arslan, the editor-in-chief of Ozgur TV, said that Polad had gone to Raqqa to cover clashes between the SDF and the Syrian government but went missing as the SDF withdrew from the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cHe attempted to go live, but as the clashes intensified this was not possible.
