{"id":187042,"date":"2026-07-02T05:28:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T05:28:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/187042\/"},"modified":"2026-07-02T05:28:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T05:28:17","slug":"u-s-iran-talks-conclude-in-doha-focused-on-strait-of-hormuz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/187042\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S., Iran Talks Conclude In Doha, Focused On Strait Of Hormuz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DOHA\/DUBAI\/VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia, July 1 (Reuters) &#8211; Iran and the United States concluded a round of indirect talks on Wednesday with no sign they had made headway toward a lasting peace, focusing instead on issues that they said had been resolved when an interim agreement was announced two weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>Sources familiar with the discussions said negotiators for the two countries spent two days in Doha discussing maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and unfreezing Iran\u2019s funds, two critical issues under the initial agreement.<\/p>\n<p>The next meeting will take place after funeral processions for Iran\u2019s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who is due to be buried on July 9, Qatar\u2019s Foreign Ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>The Doha discussions produced \u201cpositive progress\u201d on issues related to the memorandum that halted the war in June and were \u201cbuilding on the outcomes\u201d of a summit in Switzerland, the ministry spokesperson said in a post on X.<\/p>\n<p>In Washington, U.S. President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/news\/topic\/donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a> said the two sides were making progress on possible limits to Iran\u2019s nuclear program \u2014 the main reason he launched the war along with Israel in February. \u201cThe denuclearization of Iran is moving along well,\u201d he told reporters. \u201cThey\u2019ve had very good meetings, and we\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the sources said the nuclear program did not come up in the talks, which were technical in nature.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Vice President JD Vance said that matter would be addressed later. \u201cObviously, we\u2019re worried about the nuclear issue, we\u2019re going to start talking about that,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>American and Iranian negotiators held separate meetings with Qatari and Pakistani mediators, Qatar\u2019s foreign ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s son-in-law <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/news\/topic\/jared-kushner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jared Kushner<\/a> and top U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, dispatched to the region for what the White House had billed as \u201chigh-level\u201d talks, did not attend the sessions, according to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-sized__img landscape\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" alt=\"U.S. President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and envoy Steve Witkoff met the prime minister of Qatar \u2014 a mediator in the talks alongside Pakistan \u2014 to lay groundwork for the negotiations, but would not be attending the discussions themselves, the source with direct knowledge of the talks said.\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6a44f20a180000043915627b.jpeg\" \/>U.S. President Donald Trump&#8217;s son-in-law Jared Kushner and envoy Steve Witkoff met the prime minister of Qatar \u2014 a mediator in the talks alongside Pakistan \u2014 to lay groundwork for the negotiations, but would not be attending the discussions themselves, the source with direct knowledge of the talks said.<\/p>\n<p>Ludovic Marin, Pool photo via AP<\/p>\n<p>The leader of Iran\u2019s delegation, Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, said the talks concluded. Neither side said whether they had managed to bridge any of their differences.<\/p>\n<p>Who Controls The Strait?<\/p>\n<p>The initial deal calls for Iran and the United States to allow shipping to resume through the Strait of Hormuz, which handled one-fifth of global oil and liquid natural gas trade before the war.
