{"id":194196,"date":"2026-07-07T12:04:22","date_gmt":"2026-07-07T12:04:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/194196\/"},"modified":"2026-07-07T12:04:22","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T12:04:22","slug":"rahm-emanuel-will-warn-israel-us-ties-at-crossroads-in-tel-aviv-speech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/194196\/","title":{"rendered":"Rahm Emanuel will warn Israel-US ties at crossroads in Tel Aviv speech"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/rahm-emanuel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rahm Emanuel<\/a>, a potential Democratic presidential candidate and longtime defender of Israel, will denounce Prime Minister <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/benjamin-netanyahu\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> in Tel Aviv this week and deliver a bracing message that the country\u2019s relationship with the United States is \u201cat a crossroads.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt cannot stand or survive as it has been,\u201d Emanuel will say at Tel Aviv University on Wednesday, according to remarks obtained by The Associated Press. \u201cTo maintain the strength of our ties, we need significant changes and a new direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The speech, coming from a stalwart of Democrats\u2019 centrist wing, is another demonstration of how far their party has shifted away from its historic support of Israel. <\/p>\n<p>About 58% of Democrats say the U.S. is \u201ctoo supportive\u201d of the Israelis, according to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-poll-democrats-republicans-b91cdc0aaf31f6bc226a0584115b886f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a new survey<\/a> by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, up from 45% in January 2024. Roughly half of Democrats believe that Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians during the war in Gaza, an accusation that\u2019s been leveled by some human rights organizations and vehemently denied by Israel and the U.S. government.<\/p>\n<p>Emanuel\u2019s proposals will include sanctions on Israelis who attack Palestinian civilians and property along with companies and banks that support settlements considered illegal by most of the international community. Unconditional support has produced a prime minister who has presumed that his strategic interests would incur no cost if he ignored America\u2019s concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s little precedent for an American with presidential ambitions to travel to another country, much less one as fraught as Israel, to deliver such a stinging rebuke of its political leadership. Centrist figures like Emanuel have been more reluctant than <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mamdani-democrats-new-york-israel-palestine-01de0690f2fb99e89cb40817b7da0f66\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Democrats\u2019 progressive base<\/a> to question longtime U.S. support for Israel in recent years. <\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"html-embed-module-a00000\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n    Sign up for Morning Wire:<br \/>\n    Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day.\n  <\/p>\n<p>How will Netanyahu react?<\/p>\n<p>His remarks could prompt a similarly fiery response from Netanyahu, who famously once called Emanuel, who had ambitions of being the first Jewish speaker of the U.S. House, a \u201cself-hating Jew.\u201d Netanyahu faces <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-netanyahu-knesset-politics-elections-6f9aa6db190ea8bd167d723aa86d2659\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">his own battle for reelection<\/a> in October, and the veteran leader may try to use a confrontation with Emanuel for political gain by appearing to stand strong in the face of international criticism.<\/p>\n<p>But for possible Democratic presidential contenders gauging how to address the fallout from <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/israel-hamas-war\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israel\u2019s war in Gaza<\/a> and Netanyahu\u2019s perceived tilt toward the Republican Party, led by President <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a>, the speech represents an especially frontal strategy. The war has disrupted political coalitions in both major political parties in the U.S., with younger voters recoiling at Israel\u2019s approach to the conflict pressing American leaders to take a tougher stand. Your artists and academics are shut out of exhibits and conferences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Support for Israel wanes<\/p>\n<p>While Netanyahu has forged generally strong ties with Trump and the Republican Party, Israel\u2019s support among Democrats has slipped in recent years. But in portraying Israel as increasingly isolated, Emanuel\u2019s comments have echoes of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-vance-iran-us-trump-1e04959ec2dc43f367412d488b567e02\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent remarks<\/a> from Vice President <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/jd-vance\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">JD Vance<\/a>, a sign of how criticism of the country is taking hold in both parties. Speaking recently from the White House briefing room as the U.S. worked to close a deal to end the war with Iran, Vance said Trump was \u201cthe only head of state in the entire world who is sympathetic to the nation of Israel at this moment in time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For all his tough words, Emanuel, who is Jewish and whose father was born in Jerusalem, will offer notes of sympathy and understanding. He acknowledged the toll of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/i\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks<\/a> in which Hamas-led militants launched air and ground strikes on Israel, killing nearly 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages. He noted disappointments from previous rounds of peace talks with Palestinian leaders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut even while acknowledging that history, the path forward cannot be held hostage to a past defined exclusively by recriminations,\u201d he will say.<\/p>\n<p>He will call the two-state solution \u201cdiscredited\u201d and instead push for a \u201c23-state solution\u201d that includes Israel, the Palestinians and the 21 other members of the Arab League in a peace deal. <\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"image-3a0000\"\/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"Rahm Emanuel speaks at a house party in Concord, N.H., Saturday, June 6, 2026.
