{"id":1945,"date":"2026-03-04T02:12:53","date_gmt":"2026-03-04T02:12:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/1945\/"},"modified":"2026-03-04T02:12:53","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T02:12:53","slug":"albanese-says-australian-government-will-not-help-isis-linked-families-leave-syria-or-return-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/1945\/","title":{"rendered":"Albanese says Australian government will not help ISIS-linked families leave Syria or return home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Prime Minister Anthony Albanese insists the federal government will not repatriate Australian families with links to Islamic State (IS) fighters, arguing that &#8220;if you make your bed, you lie in it&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A group of 34 Australians, including 11 women and 23 children, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-16\/australian-families-with-isis-links-leave-camp-in-syria\/106351298\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106351298\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">left the Al-Roj camp in north-eastern Syria yesterday<\/a> with the intention of travelling to Australia via Damascus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The ABC was told they were forced to turn around after Syrian authorities said their journey from the Kurdish-held region had not been properly coordinated with officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It is not yet clear whether the families will attempt the trip again in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Albanese said Australian officials had certain &#8220;obligations&#8221; under the law, but would not confirm whether the families had been given Australian passports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said the government would not provide them with &#8220;any assistance or repatriation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;My mother would have said if you make your bed, you lie in it,&#8221; Mr Albanese told the ABC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;These are people who went overseas supporting Islamic State and went there to provide support for people who basically want a caliphate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A crowd of journalists and photographers surround a small group of women wearing hijabs and face masks.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1772590373_822_ec561a81d95a4f09d68bdd15dd2113fa.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A group of 11 families left the Al-Roj camp last night, but were forced to turn back. he said in a statement issued today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The federal opposition said the group of ISIS-linked families posed a security risk to Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;For anyone who shares, or potentially shares ISIS ideology \u2014 this is the ideology that underpinned the Bondi terrorist attack,&#8221; Senator Henderson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Australians must be given every confidence that for people who are linked with ISIS, that all of the appropriate security assessments have been made.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Australian citizens previously repatriated from Syria<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Successive federal governments have grappled with how to respond to Australians seeking to return from the camps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In 2019 the the Morrison government worked with an aid agency to remove eight orphaned children from a Syrian camp, including those of killed IS terrorist Khaled Sharrouf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In 2022, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-10-28\/australian-women-children-detention-camp-return-sydney\/101587288\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/101587288\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Albanese government repatriated four Australian women and their 13 children from a Syrian camp<\/a>, saying at the time that the decision was informed by &#8220;detailed work by national security agencies&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But when it was revealed last year that <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-10-03\/isis-brides-return-australia-smuggle-syria\/105850360\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105850360\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a small group of women and children had returned home<\/a>, the government insisted it had not provided support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If any of those people find their own way to return, our security agencies are satisfied that they are prepared and will be able to act in the interests of community safety,&#8221; Mr Burke said at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The director of the Al-Roj camp, Hakmiyeh Ibrahim, has previously urged all foreign governments to repatriate their citizens, warning that children were growing up surrounded by &#8220;dangerous ideas and ideologies&#8221; in the camp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If they are taken away from this community, perhaps [they can enter] rehabilitation programs and specialised centres, especially for children,&#8221; she told the ABC earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Albanese said it was &#8220;unfortunate&#8221; that children were part of the group, but reiterated that the families would not receive government support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And if anyone does manage to find their way back to Australia, then \u202fthey&#8217;ll\u202fface the full force of the law if any laws have been broken,&#8221;
