LONDON\/DOHA, July 8 (Reuters) – Qatari LNG tanker Al Rekayyat is stationary near the Strait of Hormuz and awaiting salvage operations once a \u200cfire on board has been extinguished, according to ship tracking data \u200cand industry sources on Wednesday, a day after it was hit by a projectile.<\/p>\n
The tanker, loaded \u200bwith liquefied natural gas, was hit on its port side overnight on Tuesday, one source said, while another briefed on the matter added that the vessel was at risk of exploding due to a fire in its engine room.<\/p>\n
Efforts are \u200ccontinuing to extinguish the fire, \u2060an industry source familiar with the matter told Reuters. All the crew have been safely evacuated.<\/p>\n
The LNG stored in the \u2060tanker’s tanks remains intact and there is no breach of those tanks, the industry source said.<\/p>\n
Another industry source assessed that as long as the vessel was not \u200bsubject to \u200bany further attack, it was likely to \u200bremain in its current state \u200cand not explode.<\/p>\n
“Breaching a main tank would be catastrophic,” the second industry source added.<\/p>\n
Two vessels \u2014 a tug boat and a separate service ship \u2014 are currently near the tanker, which is located near the entrance of the Strait of Hormuz and close to Oman’s coast, the LSEG and MarineTraffic ship tracking data showed.<\/p>\n
Nakilat, \u200calso known as Qatar Gas Transport Company \u200bLtd, which owns the Al Rekayyat tanker, did \u200bnot respond to a request \u200bfor comment, nor did QatarEnergy.<\/p>\n
Qatar’s foreign ministry said on Tuesday \u200cthat Iran bore full legal responsibility \u200bfor the attack, and \u200bsummoned the deputy Iranian ambassador to protest against the targeting of the tanker.<\/p>\n
It is the first time an LNG ship from Qatar, a \u200bmediator in talks between \u200cthe United States and Iran, has been struck since the start of \u200bthe Iran war on February 28.<\/p>\n
