{"id":196093,"date":"2026-07-08T11:14:18","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T11:14:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/196093\/"},"modified":"2026-07-08T11:14:18","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T11:14:18","slug":"oil-prices-jump-after-trump-says-ceasefire-with-iran-is-over-though-talks-can-continue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/196093\/","title":{"rendered":"Oil prices jump after Trump says ceasefire with Iran is &#8216;over,&#8217; though talks can continue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BANGKOK (AP) \u2014 Oil prices surged more than 6% after U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the interim agreement with <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-israel-war-oil-july-8-2026-fee04dcea661c08de12c04914ff2751b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran is \u201cover,\u201d<\/a> though he will allow talks to continue. <\/p>\n<p>Trump made the comments following <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-israel-war-oil-july-8-2026-fee04dcea661c08de12c04914ff2751b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. strikes<\/a> on Iran in reaction to attacks on three ships in the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/strait-of-hormuz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>. The price of Brent crude oil jumped 6.3% to$78.80 a barrel. U.S. benchmark crude surged 6.4% to $75.00 a barrel. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, I think it\u2019s over,\u201d Trump responded when asked about the status of the ceasefire. \u201cIt\u2019s just a waste of time dealing with them,\u201d he said on the sidelines of the two-day NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey. <\/p>\n<p>Crude prices had declined recently from spikes well above $100 a barrel to around the levels they were at before the war with Iran began in late February.<\/p>\n<p>Iran and the United States agreed <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-israel-war-oil-deal-june-17-2026-19652f4611b704c0a991bf1f5bc9a4b9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as part of their interim deal<\/a> on ending the war to allow ships to pass through the strait without paying charges for 60 days. But Tehran has insisted it must control the vessels\u2019 routes and vowed to later charge fees for passage. That would upend decades of practice in the waterway. The ships attacked Tuesday all appeared to be using a route close to Oman\u2019s shore, rather than one ordered by Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>The upsets for oil markets raise uncertainties over inflation and other economic trends. They have also coincided with waves of worries that the craze for artificial intelligence-related shares has pushed prices past the amount of gains in productivity and profits likely to result from massive investments in computer chip production capacity and data centers. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs such, geopolitical headlines will likely determine market sentiment over the coming hours. A further deterioration in the situation could weigh further on equity valuations along with rising stress in technology,\u201d Ipek Ozkardeskaya of Swissquote said in a commentary. <\/p>\n<p>In share trading, Germany\u2019s DAX shed 2.4% to 24,866.26 and the CAC 40 in Paris gave up 2.2% to 8,427.23. Britain\u2019s FTSE 100 slid 1.7% to 10,484.45.<\/p>\n<p>The future for the S&amp;P 500 edged 1% lower and that for the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 1.3%. <\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"html-embed-module-a00000\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n    Sign up for Morning Wire:<br \/>\n    Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day.\n  <\/p>\n<p>In Asian trading, Tokyo\u2019s Nikkei 225 lost 2.1% to 66,819.05, while the Kospi in South Korea shed 5.4%, to 7,246.79. <\/p>\n<p>The South Korean index has soared and then fallen back, briefly surpassing the 9,000 level last month and then succumbing to bouts of heavy selling of big <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/artificial-intelligence\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI-related<\/a> tech shares like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Samsung fell 6.3% early Wednesday after dropping about 7% the day before. SK Hynix shed early gains to drop 5.7%. <\/p>\n<p>Taiwan\u2019s Taiex rose 0.6%.<\/p>\n<p>In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng rose 3% to 24,199.46. <\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong traded shares of Chinese AI model startup Zhipu, known also as <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"http:\/\/Z.ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Z.ai<\/a> and traded as Knowledge Atlas Technology, rose 13.4% on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>A six-month lock up period for \u201ccornerstone\u201d investors after its $558 million trading debut in Hong Kong in early January expires this week. State-owned China National Radio reported late Tuesday that nearly 70% of Zhipu\u2019s cornerstone investors are committed to stay on, despite previous worries that the lock up period expiration could trigger a sell-off of shares. Zhipu\u2019s share price has risen more than 1,300% since its January trading debut in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p>The Shanghai Composite index declined 0.5% to 3,970.88. <\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in Asia, Australia\u2019s S&amp;P\/ASX 200 shed 0.2% to 8,785.10, while India\u2019s Sensex lost 0.7%.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/stock-markets-hormuz-iran-trump-oil-9563a33b0789edf00cf92e76c6516fe5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">roller-coaster ride for AI stocks<\/a> whipped back down, dragging Wall Street lower.<\/p>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 fell 0.4%, though the majority of stocks within the index rose. The drops for stocks in the artificial-intelligence industry dragged the Nasdaq composite 1.2% lower, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.2%.<\/p>\n<p>Advanced Micro Devices sank 6.5% and Intel shed 9.7%. Micron Technology lost 4.7%.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX, which owns the xAI business, fell 6.8% in its first day of trading after it was included <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/spacex-elon-musk-index-funds-3c26c10b7ca0e838cceb7324f676ef2d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in the Nasdaq 100 index<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>In other trading early Wednesday, the U.S. dollar rose to 162.45 Japanese yen from 162.11 yen.
