{"id":196123,"date":"2026-07-08T11:30:32","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T11:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/196123\/"},"modified":"2026-07-08T11:30:32","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T11:30:32","slug":"funeral-procession-for-iranian-supreme-leader-khamenei-reaches-iraq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/196123\/","title":{"rendered":"Funeral procession for Iranian supreme leader Khamenei reaches Iraq"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Funeral ceremonies for Iran&#8217;s late supreme Lleader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, have begun in the Iraqi city of Najaf, which is sacred to Shia Muslims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A funeral procession set off early on Wednesday, with local reports suggesting that hundreds of thousands of people turned out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Among those taking part in the procession were Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and senior religious and political leaders from Iraq.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Iraq&#8217;s Prime Minister Ali al-Saidi had received Khamenei&#8217;s body the previous evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The so-called Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), an alliance of predominantly Shia militias in Iraq loyal to Iran, reported that more than 2 million people had turned out for the funeral procession in Najaf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">There was no confirmation of the figures from other sources, but images showed enormous crowds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The majority of Iraqis are Shia.
