An FAI motion in favour of proceeding with the Nations League matches against Israel has passed following an EGM in Dublin on Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n

The governing body asked its members if they endorsed the organisation carrying out its responsibility to fulfil its obligations in relation to UEFA fixtures.<\/p>\n

The motion passed by 75 votes to 32, with three abstentions.<\/p>\n

Members were asked to vote on the following ordinary motion: \u201cWhile acknowledging the strength of feeling regarding support for Palestine and the upcoming UEFA Men\u2019s Nations League fixtures, that the members recognise the profound impact that any non-fulfilment of UEFA fixtures would have on Irish football as a whole and on its future development, and accordingly endorses the Association fulfilling its obligations in respect of those fixtures.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ireland are set to take on Israel as part of their UEFA Nations League B campaign, with the \u2018away\u2019 leg being played in Debrecen in Hungary and the \u2018home\u2019 tie being played behind closed doors in Ba\u010dka Topola, Serbia.<\/p>\n

Some fans and pundits have called for the game to be boycotted, in response to Israel\u2019s ongoing military actions against Palestine<\/a>, which a UN commission has described as a genocide.<\/p>\n

In October 2025, Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson condemned the lack of sanctions on Israel, citing the difference in treatment of Russia after the invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t see a difference between FIFA and UEFA banning Russia and not Israel. I don\u2019t see the difference,\u201c said the Icelandic manager.<\/p>\n

However, Hallgrimsson doesn\u2019t want to boycott the autumn games, and his argument is based on footballing reasons.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Association understands and respects the views expressed by its members, as well as players and staff, supporters, campaigners, members of the public and the Irish footballing community in relation to the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League fixtures between Ireland and Israel,\u201d said an FAI spokesperson.<\/p>\n
