{"id":199294,"date":"2026-07-10T03:17:21","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T03:17:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/199294\/"},"modified":"2026-07-10T03:17:21","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T03:17:21","slug":"syrias-voting-rights-restored-by-chemical-weapons-watchdog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/199294\/","title":{"rendered":"Syria&#8217;s voting rights restored by chemical weapons watchdog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) \u2014 The global chemical weapons watchdog on Thursday reinstated <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/syria\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Syria\u2019s<\/a> voting rights at the body, rewarding Damascus for \u201cconstructive engagement\u201d with the organization and a willingness to destroy previously hidden stockpiles of toxic munitions.<\/p>\n<p>The decision by the executive council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons underscores a new era of cooperation since the ouster of former President <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/syria-opcw-chemical-weapons-beb5273bdfe0499c30f929a671f98acd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bashar Assad<\/a> in 2024, and comes five years after Syria\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/netherlands-chemical-weapons-damascus-the-hague-syria-ab2da467f4a4d9336010a141e5178276\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">voting rights were suspended<\/a> as a punishment for the repeated use of toxic gas by Damascus. It was the first time a member state had been hit with such a sanction.<\/p>\n<p>The new openness has already produced results, In May, the OPCW announced that dozens of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/syria-opcw-chemical-weapons-beb5273bdfe0499c30f929a671f98acd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chemical bombs and rockets<\/a> left over from Assad\u2019s rule had been found in the country as previously undeclared weapons sites were opened to inspectors.<\/p>\n<p>The OPCW\u2019s executive council also approved plans for destroying some of that recently declared stockpile at a site in Al Qutayfah, 37 kilometers (23 miles) north of the capital, including materials used to make a nerve agent.<\/p>\n<p>The decisions \u201creflect the tangible progress achieved through continued cooperation and constructive engagement between the Technical Secretariat and the Syrian Arab Republic,\u201d supported by other member states, OPCW Director-General Fernando Arias said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes a day after U.S. authorities announced that Washington will remove Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sharaa-syria-washington-visit-trump-0e815749ca602cc64bf88e1a7db41b1b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa<\/a>, a former insurgent who led the offensive that unseated Assad, seeks to rebuild Syria and restore its long-shattered ties with the West.
