Josh Stein about it on Monday, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/news\/local\/stein-nc-war-iran-middle-east-march-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he could not say for certain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this point, I don\u2019t [know],\u201d Stein said. \u201cAlthough \u2026 I do know. I just don\u2019t know specifically which ones,&#8221; he said, referring to which companies or battalions will deploy to the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no conflict in this world where residents of North<br \/>\nCarolina are not at the tip of the spear. Whether it&#8217;s Camp Lejeune [with]<br \/>\nMarines or Fort Bragg [with] our Army.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A WRAL News viewer named Adam sent in an email, saying, \u201cI<br \/>\nwanted to write in as a resident of Wayne County. There is a great possibility<br \/>\nthat Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is involved in the Iran conflict. While it<br \/>\nmay seem smaller than Camp LeJeune or Fort Bragg, it does have a large presence<br \/>\nin this county and in history. [I] just wanted to speak my mind and make sure<br \/>\nwe weren&#8217;t forgotten about.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Air Force has not said whether airmen from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base are involved.\u00a0However, fighter squadrons would typically respond to situations like the War on Iran.<\/p>\n<p>North Carolina is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.milvets.nc.gov\/benefits-services\/military-bases-north-carolina#Seymour_Johnson_Air_Base\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">home<br \/>\nto a large military footprint<\/a>. It includes:<\/p>\n<p>Fort Bragg (U.S. Army)<\/p>\n<p>It is the\u00a0largest post in\u00a0the U.S. military, one of the biggest in the world.\u00a0Fort Bragg covers more than 160,000 acres and is home to the 82nd Airborne, the 16th Airborne Corps, United States Army Forces Command (FORSCOM), the U.S. Army Reserve Command,\u00a0the 18th Aviation Brigade, 4th Medical Command and the U.S. Army Special Operations Command.<\/p>\n<p>Fort Bragg has 50,622 active-duty troops and 14,076 civilian<br \/>\npersonnel.<\/p>\n<p>Nearby Pope Army Airfield (Air Force) has 2,100 active-duty<br \/>\ntroops and 500-plus civilian personnel.<\/p>\n<p>Camp Lejeune is home to Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard commands<br \/>\nand multiple training schools. It&#8217;s the largest marine corps base on the East<br \/>\nCoast with 35,186 active-duty troops and 5,704 civilian personnel.<\/p>\n<p>Air Station New River (Marine Corps) has 5,607 active-duty<br \/>\ntroops and 186 civilian employees.<\/p>\n<p>In Goldsboro, the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base has about 4,100 active-duty troops. It is the home of F-15E Strike Eagles. The 4th Fighter Wing squadrons can deploy worldwide on short notice.<\/p>\n<p>In Craven County, Air Station Cherry Point has 5,973<br \/>\nactive-duty troops and 5,422 civilian personnel.<\/p>\n<p>In Pasquotank\u00a0County, there is the Coast Guard\u2019s Air<br \/>\nStation Elizabeth City and the Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point in<br \/>\nSouthport. The Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point is the largest military terminal<br \/>\nin the world.<\/p>\n<p>The Army also has offices in Charlotte and Durham.<\/p>\n<p>The National Guard also has 11,000 members across the state,<br \/>\nwith its main office in Wake County.<\/p>\n<p>The Outer Banks is also a U.S. Coast Guard sector.<\/p>\n<p>In all, there are more than 100,000 active-duty, reserve and<br \/>\nguard members across North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOther worldwide missions, operations and conflicts that NC<br \/>\ntroops are involved in<\/p>\n<p>Iran is the big military story right now, but there are many other recent military operations worldwide that involved troops from North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>It includes the <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/defense\/5606868-operation-southern-spear-announced\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Operation<br \/>\nSouthern Spear<\/a>, which is a counter-narcotics enforcement operation in the<br \/>\nCaribbean. Some 2,200 Marines are part of the operation, including several from<br \/>\nNorth Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/4247993\/reforpac-2025-us-air-force-executes-unprecedented-surge-into-pacific-theater\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">July<br \/>\n2025 military surge in the Pacific<\/a> included fighter squadrons out of<br \/>\nSeymour Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>When the U.S. captured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/news\/ap\/40a9e-deposed-venezuelan-president-nicolas-maduro-asks-judge-to-toss-out-indictment-against-him\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deposed<br \/>\nVenezuelan President Nicolas Maduro<\/a>, Marines and special operations units<br \/>\nconnected to North Carolina were part of that.<\/p>\n<p>When the federal government needed help with immigration<br \/>\nenforcement in Florida, troops from New River mobilized to work with the United<br \/>\nStates Immigration and Customs Enforcement [ICE], providing logistical and<br \/>\nadministrative support.<\/p>\n<p>The National Guard is often deployed to help North Carolinians<br \/>\nrecover from a hurricane. It includes the damage from Hurricane Helene in<br \/>\nSeptember 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEconomic impact of military presence in North Carolina<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncmbc.us\/about-us\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">According to the<br \/>\nNorth Carolina Military Business Center<\/a>, North Carolina\u2019s military<br \/>\nfootprint is the second-largest sector in the state, generating $79.7 billion<br \/>\nin 2024. It accounted for 12.8% of the state\u2019s GDP.<\/p>\n<p>Eighty-one of North Carolina&#8217;s 100 counties are home to a<br \/>\ncompany that has a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncmbc.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024-Mission-Report_Public.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\nprime contract with the Department of Defense<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpi.nc.gov\/students-families\/student-support\/nc-supports-military-children\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">North<br \/>\nCarolina Department of Instruction<\/a> estimates there are 100,000 school-age<br \/>\nchildren of active-duty military.<\/p>\n<p>The UNC System reports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northcarolina.edu\/news\/unc-system-enrolls-record-number-of-military-affiliated-students\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">it<br \/>\nhas 23,000 military-affiliated students<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Every year, 20,000 service members transition out of<br \/>\nthe military into other industries in North Carolina. There are at least 700,000<br \/>\nveterans in North Carolina, the eighth-largest veteran population in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>There are countless medical providers\u00a0set up\u00a0for<br \/>\nservice\u00a0members, including the VA, TRICARE\u00a0services and others.<\/p>\n<p>Entire North Carolina municipalities have been built to<br \/>\nservice military families: Restaurants, retail, real estate and others.<\/p>\n<p>Have a question for us?
