Kuwait’s Coast Guard did not intentionally cause casualties
\nwhen it opened fire on an Iraqi fishing boat on July 3, Iraq’s Foreign Ministry
\nsaid on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The assessment was based on a preliminary report submitted
\nby Iraq’s embassy in Kuwait on July 5 using information provided by the Kuwaiti
\nForeign Ministry. Kuwaiti authorities later presented video footage of the
\nshooting during a meeting with Iraqi officials, including National Security
\nAdviser Qasim Al-Aboudi and Basra Governor Asaad Al-Eidani. <\/p>\n
Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein subsequently directed the
\nrelevant authorities and Iraq’s diplomatic mission in Kuwait to pursue the
\ncase, establish the circumstances of the shooting, and coordinate with their
\nKuwaiti counterparts.<\/p>\n
During an official visit to Kuwait on July 8, Hussein raised
\nthe issue with the Kuwaiti leadership, requesting a full account of the
\nshooting, while expressing Baghdad\u2019s \u201cdeep concern\u201d and its rejection of any
\nrecurrence of incidents that endanger Iraqi citizens and harm bilateral
\nrelations.<\/p>\n
He also instructed Iraq’s embassy in Kuwait to continue
\nmonitoring the ongoing investigation and coordinate with the Iraqi Naval Force
\nto obtain further information and its official assessment.<\/p>\n
\u201cResponsibility for maintaining the security and safety of
\nIraq\u2019s territorial waters, ensuring the safety of individuals using them for
\nfishing or navigation, and determining the areas designated for safe navigation
\nand fishing falls within the jurisdiction of the competent Iraqi authorities,
\nforemost among them the Iraqi Naval Force, in accordance with the applicable
\nlaws and established mandates,\u201d the ministry stressed.<\/p>\n
Earlier this week, the Iraqi fishermen<\/a> who had been detained
\nin Kuwait returned to Iraq through the Safwan border crossing. The incident
\nsparked public anger in Iraq, with calls for protests<\/a> on July 12 outside the
\nKuwaiti Consulate in Basra demanding greater protection for Iraqi fishermen and
