Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) \u2013 Iraqi security forces continued their operations targeting former officials and members of parliament as part of a campaign to combat corruption and recover public funds.<\/p>\n
Security forces raided the residence of former MP Talal al-Zubaie in western Baghdad early Sunday morning, detaining him and two of his sons on financial corruption charges.<\/p>\n
Previously, al-Zubaie headed the Iraqi parliament\u2019s Integrity Committee.<\/p>\n
Local media reported that Iraqi troops stormed the residence of former minister Ahmed al-Asadi, uncovering significant quantities of money and gold bars valued at 20 billion Iraqi dinars (approximately $15.2 million).<\/p>\n
Iraqi forces entered the Green Zone residence of al-Asadi, the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs in Mohammed Shia al-Sudani\u2019s cabinet, early on Sunday. They seized between $5 and $7 million as well as 13 gold bars stashed inside a vehicle at his home after he managed to escape.<\/p>\n
The Iraqi government launched a countrywide anti-corruption campaign last month known as \u201cOperation Dawn.\u201d Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi ordered the crackdown, which has resulted in the arrests of several lawmakers and senior officials, as well as the recovery of millions of dollars, gold, luxurious cars, and real estate.<\/p>\n
