The U.S. and Iran are both claiming control of the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway in the conflict between the two countries, after weekend fighting.<\/p>\n

In a post on the social platform<\/a> X Sunday night, U.S. Central Command (Centcom) said that it had “completed a new wave of offensive strikes against Iran” on Sunday “hitting dozens of targets at multiple locations with precision munitions to degrade Iran’s ability to continue attacking international shipping flowing through the Strait of Hormuz.”<\/p>\n

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade. Iran does not control it,” Centcom added in its post. “U.S. forces are postured and prepared to ensure that freedom of navigation remains available to commercial shipping despite Iran’s continued unwarranted aggression, harassment, threats, and arbitrary declarations.”<\/p>\n

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) responded to Centcom<\/a> by stating that “the Strait of Hormuz is our territory, and we will not allow a rogue and child-killing army from the other side of the world to continue its illegal interference in it.” according to The Associated Press.<\/p>\n

On Saturday<\/a>, the U.S. military launched a third round of strikes against Iran, responding to an Iranian attack on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Centcom.<\/p>\n

Iran said it was closing the strait after the IRGC hit a Cyprus-flagged container ship over using an “unauthorized route” through the waterway. Centcom said one crew member was missing and that the ship experienced “significant” damage to its engine room.<\/p>\n

“Iran was provided yet another opportunity to demonstrate adherence to the Memorandum of Understanding after being held accountable for earlier attacks on commercial vessels but has again failed,” the military command said.<\/p>\n
