Calling the president\u2019s conduct \u201can authoritarian takeover,\u201d U.S. Rep Adam Smith, D-Bellevue, called for Donald Trump to be removed from office on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

In a video<\/a>, Smith cited the president\u2019s recent remarks about taking over the Strait of Hormuz<\/a> and federal immigration agents killing people on American streets<\/a>. Smith also pointed to a speech Trump is reportedly making Thursday night<\/a> focusing on election security, amid the president\u2019s continued strategy of pushing baseless claims about voter fraud<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an authoritarian takeover of our government,\u201d Smith said in the video as he walked outside. \u201cHe is jeopardizing citizens\u2019 lives. He is jeopardizing global stability. And it is all so unhinged it is almost impossible to watch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith, the ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee<\/a>, voted twice to impeach Trump, who was acquitted both times after Senate impeachment trials. In Tuesday\u2019s video, he said he doesn\u2019t \u201clove impeachment as a strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we have to make the case that Donald Trump has completely lost it,\u201d he said, saying at another point, \u201cRepublicans, either in Congress or the Cabinet \u2014 something has to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Smith on Tuesday night didn\u2019t immediately respond to questions, including whether Smith was planning on filing an impeachment resolution.<\/p>\n

In July 2024, Smith called for Democratic President Joe Biden to end his reelection bid<\/a>. Smith in that case was the first member of Washington\u2019s congressional delegation \u2014 and one of the most senior Democrats in Congress at that point \u2014 to make that call.<\/p>\n
