{"id":207764,"date":"2026-07-15T10:58:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T10:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/207764\/"},"modified":"2026-07-15T10:58:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T10:58:12","slug":"british-man-jailed-in-iran-given-additional-two-year-sentence-family-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/207764\/","title":{"rendered":"British man jailed in Iran given additional two-year sentence, family says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The family of British couple Craig and Lindsay Foreman, who are serving a 10-year prison sentence in Iran on espionage charges that they deny, said on Wednesday that a judge had extended Craig Foreman\u2019s sentence by two years for speaking to the media.<\/p>\n<p>The couple was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/family-of-uk-couple-detained-in-iran-express-serious-concern-for-their-welfare\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arrested in 2025<\/a> while traveling through Iran by motorcycle as part of a round-the-world journey. Britain has described their original sentences as \u201ctotally unjustifiable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joe Bennett, Lindsay Foreman\u2019s son and the\u00a0family\u2019s spokesperson, said they had received reports that Craig Foreman had been taken before a judge and informed that his\u00a0sentence\u00a0had been extended because he had spoken to the media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe understand he was told he was being taken to see his lawyer, but was instead brought before a judge and informed of the\u00a0additional\u00a0sentence,\u201d Bennett said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>He said Craig Foreman had been denied access to a lawyer and a translator and was\u00a0given\u00a0no opportunity to defend himself.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Britain\u2019s foreign ministry said in an emailed statement that it was \u201curgently following up with the Iranian authorities about the reported increased sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month, two independent UN experts said the Foremans appeared to have been wrongfully detained and sentenced following proceedings that failed to meet basic fair trial guarantees, while expressing concern over a hunger strike the couple began in May.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/05\/executions-protest.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3829247\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/executions-protest-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tDemonstrators holding signs as they gather near the Francis Scott Key Bridge during rally in support of the Iranian people and to condemn the execution of political prisoners in Iran, in Washington, DC, on May 16, 2026. (Amid Farahi\/AFP)<\/p>\n<p>Also on Wednesday, Iran\u2019s judiciary said it hanged a man after\u00a0finding him guilty of taking part in anti-government protests that rocked the country over the winter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMohammad Amini Dehaghani, a collaborator with the enemy, was hanged this morning after confirmation of the verdict by the supreme court,\u201d the judiciary\u2019s press agency reported.<\/p>\n<p>He was found guilty of moharebeh (war against God in Persian) and \u201ccorruption on earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The condemned had \u201cthrown a Molotov cocktail on January 9 outside the governor\u2019s office in Dehaghan, set it alight and destroyed public property as well as the town\u2019s police station,\u201d state media added.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of December, protests against the cost of living in Iran spread rapidly across the country and expanded to include political demands.<\/p>\n<p>Iran brutally suppressed the protests, with opposition groups saying tens of thousands were killed in the crackdown that included live fire at crowds.<\/p>\n<p>Iranian authorities have portrayed the protests as riots backed by the United States and Israel, and said the violence killed around 3,000 people.\u00a0Rights groups abroad put the toll higher and accused the security forces of firing at demonstrators.<\/p>\n<p>The number of executions has surged since the outbreak of Iran\u2019s war with the US and Israel on February 28.\u00a0According to Amnesty International, Iran conducts the second most executions of any country, after China.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\tWe can&#8217;t do this work alone.\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"200\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Untitled-design-4-200x200.jpg\" class=\"attachment-square size-square wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\"\/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The war with Iran has been draining for all of us in Israel.
