The move has drawn scrutiny because the United States has traditionally avoided placing sitting presidents on its money as the new coin aligns more with a practice commonly found in monarchies.<\/p>\n
The Treasury has described the piece as a new commemorative $1 coin, with a “gold-like finish,” according to ABC News. A Treasury spokesperson told the outlet the coin is expected to be released in the fall. Earlier reporting indicated the administration planned a $1 coin intended to circulate as currency, but the Treasury has not yet clarified whether the newly unveiled version will enter general circulation or primarily be marketed as a commemorative issue.<\/p>\n

Which Countries Have Put Living Leaders on Their Coins?<\/p>\n
Living monarchs appear on coins in many countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, where King Charles III has replaced Queen Elizabeth II on new coinage. That tradition is different from elected or political leaders appearing on currency because the monarch is the hereditary head of state, and coin portraits change with the throne.<\/p>\n

The more controversial comparisons involve living political leaders or rulers whose portraits appeared on coins, banknotes or commemorative currency while they were still in power. Notable examples have included Ferdinand Marcos in the Philippines, Bashar al-Assad in Syria, Idi Amin in Uganda, Hastings Kamuzu Banda in Malawi, Saddam Hussein in Iraq and Muammar Gaddafi in Libya.<\/p>\n
Why the Trump Coin Is Unusual<\/p>\n
The controversy is not simply that a living person is appearing on money. It is that a sitting U.S. president would appear on an official American coin while still in office.<\/p>\n
The United States has long avoided that practice. George Washington rejected appearing on the first U.S. silver dollar, and that the tradition of using deceased figures was tied to the country\u2019s rejection of monarchy. <\/p>\n
The 1866 Thayer Amendment barred living people from appearing on U.S. \u201cbonds, securities, notes, or postal currency,\u201d while the 2005 Presidential $1 Coin Act separately said no coin in that presidential series may bear the image of a living current or former president.<\/p>\n
One exception to the rule was in 1926 when a half-dollar showing President Calvin Coolidge alongside George Washington was introduced. <\/p>\n
