Iraq’s parliamentary Security and
\nDefense Committee on Thursday recommended dismissing the commander of the Iraqi
\nNavy over alleged failures to protect Iraqi fishermen following last week’s
\nfatal shooting of a fisherman near the maritime border with Kuwait.<\/p>\n
Committee member Mahmoud Faleh
\nAl-Sayyid said the decision followed a committee hearing with Navy Commander
\nLt. Gen. Mazin Kbayan and other security officials. He attributed the
\nrecommendation to proven negligence in the performance of duty and the alleged violations
\nthe fishermen were subjected to.<\/p>\n
Last week, Kuwaiti authorities
\ndetained<\/a> an Iraqi fishing boat and its five-member crew near the maritime
\nborder. The fishermen were later returned through the Safwan border crossing
\nalong with the slain fisherman’s body and another fisherman who was wounded in
\nthe incident.<\/p>\n
