{"id":214100,"date":"2026-07-19T23:41:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-19T23:41:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/214100\/"},"modified":"2026-07-19T23:41:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-19T23:41:17","slug":"us-service-member-killed-in-northern-iraq-us-central-command-says-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/214100\/","title":{"rendered":"US service member killed in northern Iraq, US Central Command says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">A U.S. service member was killed on Saturday \u201cduring a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance\u201d in northern Iraq, U.S. Central Command said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The unexploded ordnance was from a \u201cdowned Iranian one-way attack drone,\u201d Central Command said in a statement released Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The death of the U.S. service member in Iraq follows in the wake of two U.S. service members killed in action on Friday in an Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack on U.S. and partner forces in Jordan, U.S. Central Command <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/centcom\/status\/2078530691109974522?s=46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/centcom\/status\/2078530691109974522?s=46\">announced<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Four more troops had to be medically evacuated to hospitals in Jordan. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Those four service members have since been discharged, the command added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cOther personnel who were evaluated for minor injuries have returned to duty,\u201d the release stated. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">U.S. Central Command originally noted that a third U.S. service member was missing, however, CENTCOM <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CENTCOM\/status\/2078920477779890312?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CENTCOM\/status\/2078920477779890312?s=20\">announced today<\/a> that \u201cAfter a thorough search, U.S. military personnel found unidentified remains at the location earlier today. An examination process to verify the remains is ongoing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">U.S. Central Command is withholding the identities of the dead until 24 hours after the service members\u2019 next of kin have been notified. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Additional information about the exact location of the attack had not been provided as of publication. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The latest casualties bring the toll of American troops killed in the war with Iran to 18. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Most recently, the commanding officer of the Navy\u2019s Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5, Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards, was killed on July 1 when the MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter he was aboard went down in the Arabian Sea. Three other sailors were rescued following the emergency landing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">More than 400 U.S. troops have been wounded in the campaign, which began Feb. 28. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__BioWrapper-sc-cy7r53-0 eATlTY a-body2\">J.D.
