{"id":21651,"date":"2026-03-16T12:19:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T12:19:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/21651\/"},"modified":"2026-03-16T12:19:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T12:19:08","slug":"lebanon-marks-34-archaeological-sites-with-blue-shields-for-wartime-protection-middle-east-monitor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/21651\/","title":{"rendered":"Lebanon marks 34 archaeological sites with blue shields for wartime protection \u2013 Middle East Monitor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lebanon has placed blue shields on 34 archaeological sites across the country to protect them during the ongoing war, Culture Minister Ghassan Salameh announced on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>According to Lebanon\u2019s National News Agency, Salameh said the measure aims to ensure compliance with the 1954 Hague Convention, which provides international protection for cultural property during armed conflict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ministry did not stand idly by,\u201d Salameh said, adding that he contacted UNESCO Director-General Khaled Anani from the first day of the war to stress the importance of adhering to the convention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlue shields have been placed on archaeological sites so that the enemy will be aware of them and respect the convention,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Salameh explained that 34 sites have been granted enhanced protection since the 2014 war on Lebanon, with the blue shield symbol marking their protected status under international agreements. However, he noted that several important sites remain outside the current protection list.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeastmonitor.com\/20260316-israel-says-troops-launch-limited-ground-operations-against-hezbollah-in-southern-lebanon\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israel says troops launch \u2018limited ground operations\u2019 against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The minister said the Ministry of Culture had dispatched an adviser to UNESCO in an effort to convene an extraordinary meeting of the World Heritage Committee to secure enhanced protection for 30 additional heritage sites.<\/p>\n<p>Salameh also warned that the war has already caused damage to several cultural institutions and heritage areas.
