{"id":218719,"date":"2026-07-22T19:57:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T19:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/218719\/"},"modified":"2026-07-22T19:57:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T19:57:09","slug":"shipping-billionaire-george-prokopious-tanker-apparently-seized-by-iran-report-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/218719\/","title":{"rendered":"Shipping Billionaire George Prokopiou\u2019s Tanker Apparently Seized By Iran, Report Says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Topline<\/p>\n<p class=\"topline-summary\">Iranian forces appear to have seized a tanker owned by Greek shipping magnate George Prokopiou after striking it in the Strait of Hormuz, part of a wave of attacks that has effectively halted commercial traffic through one of the world&#8217;s most important oil transit routes. <\/p>\n<p>Ships are docked along a pier at the Khor Fakkan Container Terminal along the Gulf of Oman on July 14, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>AFP via Getty ImagesKey Facts<\/p>\n<p class=\"timeline-fact\">The Kavomaleas, a tanker owned by Prokopiou&#8217;s company Dynacom, was hit by two projectiles off the Omani coast Sunday night, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/0c0b1e83-8e5e-4c86-b9c6-179dba51fc69?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/0c0b1e83-8e5e-4c86-b9c6-179dba51fc69?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" aria-label=\"Financial Times\">Financial Times<\/a> reported, forcing the crew to abandon ship. <\/p>\n<p class=\"timeline-fact\">FT cited European Space Agency satellite images from Tuesday appearing to show the Kavomaleas with a plume of smoke rising from its engine in Iranian waters, and shipping analysts told the outlet it was &#8220;highly likely&#8221; it had been captured. <\/p>\n<p class=\"timeline-fact\">Kavomaleas was in the strait to pick up more than 500,000 barrels of oil in the area, per FT, and the company told the outlet another of its ships, the Acheloos, was also hit on Sunday night while carrying 2 million barrels of oil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"timeline-fact\">Dynacom, which is known for taking trades in parts of the world that other companies avoid, has sent at least 10 tankers through the Strait of Hormuz since the route was effectively closed in February following strikes from the U.S. and Israel. <\/p>\n<p class=\"timeline-fact\">Prokopiou <a href=\"https:\/\/greekcitytimes.com\/2026\/06\/02\/greece-has-tradition-of-breaking-blockades-since-antiquity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/greekcitytimes.com\/2026\/06\/02\/greece-has-tradition-of-breaking-blockades-since-antiquity\/\" aria-label=\"last month likened\">last month likened<\/a> his behavior of sailing through contested waters to the Greek merchants in the Napoleonic Wars and implied he wouldn\u2019t back down despite the ongoing conflict. <\/p>\n<p class=\"timeline-fact\">President Donald Trump on Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116963738416841583\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116963738416841583\" aria-label=\"threatened\">threatened<\/a> to bomb a bridge or power plant for each vessel attacked in the Strait of Hormuz going forward, but had not yet specifically commented on the reported capture of the Kavomaleas, which is registered in Malta. <\/p>\n<p>CRUCIAL QUOTE<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreece has a tradition of breaking blockades since antiquity. I don\u2019t want to go into more details, but I believe the hints are enough to understand what I mean,\u201d Prokopiou said. <\/p>\n<p>WHAT TO WATCH FOR<\/p>\n<p>If Iran formally acknowledges holding the Kavomaleas and what conditions, if any, it sets for the crew\u2019s release or the vessel&#8217;s return.<\/p>\n<p>BIG NUMBER<\/p>\n<p>3. If the Kavomaleas has been captured, it would be the third such vessel to have been taken by the Iranians since the start of the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran. Two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/iran-takes-seized-ships-port-countries-seek-info-seafarers-safety-2026-04-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/iran-takes-seized-ships-port-countries-seek-info-seafarers-safety-2026-04-23\/\" aria-label=\"container ships\">container ships<\/a> operated by shipping company MSC were seized in April and its ships and crews have reportedly still not been released. <\/p>\n<p>Key background<\/p>\n<p>The Strait of Hormuz shipping channel, through which a significant portion of the world\u2019s oil flows, has been blocked by Iran since attacks on the country began at the end of February. Disagreements over control of the Strait of Hormuz\u2014which was an open international waterway prior to the start of the conflict\u2014is driving ongoing hostilities and have repeatedly derailed negotiations. The Pentagon is seeking an additional $67 billion in immediate additional funding for the war, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told Congress on Tuesday, and estimated the war has cost the U.S. $37.5 billion total.<\/p>\n<p>FORBES VALUATION<\/p>\n<p>Prokopiou, worth an estimated $4.7 billion as the fifth richest person in Greece, built his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/george-prokopiou\/?ctpv=rtb&amp;list=rtb\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/george-prokopiou\/?ctpv=rtb&amp;list=rtb\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"fortune\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fortune<\/a> through three Greek shipping companies: Dynacom, which he founded in 1991; Sea Traders, founded in 1974; and Dynagas, founded in 2004.
